Overview

NEXT Insurance, which has called itself ERGO NEXT Insurance since January 2026, is a digital small business insurer based in Palo Alto, California. It sells general liability, business owner's policies, workers' compensation, commercial auto, professional liability and a handful of other lines online, through agents and through partner platforms. The company says it insures more than 750,000 U.S. small businesses across more than 1,300 professions.

The big change is ownership. Munich Re signed a definitive agreement on March 19, 2025 (announced March 20) to buy all of NEXT at a valuation of $2.6 billion. ERGO, Munich Re's primary insurance arm, already held about 29% and completed the purchase on July 1, 2025. NEXT now sits inside ERGO's management structure, and its own site says ERGO NEXT has been "fully integrated into ERGO." For the wider group see the Munich Re profile, which also covers sister unit HSB.

NEXT has no rank of its own here. Its insurance company, Next Insurance US Company, appears in the Munich Re group's NAIC filings. At the time of the deal NEXT reported a 2024 top line of $548 million, more than 600,000 customers and about 700 employees.

Two corporate layers matter to buyers. Next Insurance, Inc. and its affiliates (Next First Insurance Agency, Next Online Insurance Services, Next Insurance Services and AP Intego Insurance Group) are licensed insurance agencies that may be paid commissions by insurers. Policies are issued by Next Insurance US Company or, on some business, by State National Insurance Company or National Specialty Insurance Company, which act as fronting carriers. Check the declarations page to see which one is on your policy.

History

Guy Goldstein, Nissim Tapiro and Alon Huri founded NEXT in 2016. Goldstein and Huri had built Check, a mobile bill-pay app that Intuit bought in 2014. Their pitch was that small business insurance was slow to quote, written on one-size-fits-all forms and expensive for very small accounts, and that a tech-first insurer could price trades individually and sell in minutes.

Munich Re was an early partner and investor, and ERGO built a stake of about 29% before the takeover. Today the business runs through its own carrier, Next Insurance US Company, alongside agency arms that include AP Intego Insurance Group. Product milestones from its own releases include a standalone professional liability policy for consultants (October 2024), multi-location single-state workers' comp (February 2025) and an expanded BOP, available in 41 states including New York and Texas by September 2025.

After the July 2025 closing, AM Best brought NEXT into Munich Re's rating unit in September 2025, and the rebrand to ERGO NEXT followed on January 15, 2026. In May 2026 it began offering coverage to TikTok Shop sellers. On September 25, 2026, ERGO named Goldstein its Chief AI Officer on the ERGO Group management board, effective October 1, 2026; he keeps the ERGO NEXT CEO title.

Allstate is also a distribution source. Allstate no longer writes Allstate-brand commercial policies, and its business insurance page sends shoppers for a BOP and most non-auto business coverage to ERGO NEXT.

Business insurance products

The site lists general liability, workers' compensation, commercial property, business personal property, commercial auto, professional liability and errors and omissions, tools and equipment (an inland marine form for contractors' gear), the business owner's policy, product liability, employment practices liability and liquor liability. Certificates of insurance are part of the product: policyholders can issue them, add additional insureds and use a COI analyzer for custom wording.

What you will not find advertised: cyber, D&O, umbrella as a headline product, surety or large-fleet auto. NEXT is built for the first $1 million of liability limits and a few employees, not layered programs.

Who it insures

The target is the microbusiness and small business owner: handymen, carpenters, roofers, painters, HVAC and landscaping contractors, cleaners, personal trainers and yoga teachers, consultants and accountants, photographers, real estate agents, retailers, e-commerce and Amazon sellers, restaurants and caterers, day care operators and auto repair shops. NEXT says its fastest growth has come in professional services, hospitality, retail and construction.

Availability varies. Not every line is filed in every state: the BOP reached 41 states by late 2025, and some coverage is issued on fronting paper rather than NEXT's own. Businesses with heavy exposures (large fleets, high-hazard manufacturing, big general contractors) are outside the online appetite and belong with a broker.

How to buy

You can buy direct: the online application takes about 10 minutes and issues instant proof of insurance. Licensed U.S.-based staff answer by phone or chat weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central, and an AI assistant handles routine questions around the clock.

Independent agents can also place NEXT through an online quote-and-bind platform, with an agent loyalty program launched in January 2026. Embedded partners and referral sources, including Allstate's website and TikTok Shop, route customers to NEXT as well. Because the company is itself an agency, it is paid commissions by the insurers it places with, in addition to underwriting profit on its own paper. If you want to compare markets, see our guide to buying business insurance online and agent, broker or direct.

Claims

Customers file claims by logging in and choosing "File a claim," or through the app, which sends status notifications. Non-customers (for example, someone injured at a policyholder's site) can file with the online claims form or by phone at 855-222-5919. Each claim gets a dedicated claims advocate, and NEXT says its goal is to respond within one business day. Documents can also go by email to the advocate or by mail to ERGO NEXT Insurance, P.O. Box 60787, Palo Alto, CA 94306.

The company published its own claims statistics for January 2021 through October 2024: a 15-day median resolution time and about one in three claims resolved within seven days. Those are company figures, not audited benchmarks.

Financial strength and ratings

In September 2025 AM Best assigned NEXT an A+ (Superior) financial strength rating and an "aa" long-term issuer credit rating as part of Munich Re's lead rating unit. The rating is a group rating: it reflects Munich Re's support rather than NEXT's standalone results. Munich Re's July 2026 AM Best affirmation at A+ (Superior), stable, is covered in the Munich Re profile.

Before the acquisition NEXT was a venture-backed startup; as a wholly owned ERGO unit it does not publish standalone financial results. We found no J.D. Power small commercial ranking for NEXT.

Strengths and weaknesses

NEXT is one of the few business insurers where an owner can quote, bind and pull a certificate in one sitting, and since 2025 it has a large reinsurance group behind it. Its limits are the flip side of that speed: a narrow product set for small risks, and an online-first service model.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best since September 2025 through Munich Re; full online purchase with instant, self-service certificates and additional insureds; more than 1,300 eligible professions, many of them small contractors; sold direct, through agents and through partners such as Allstate.
  • Weaknesses: Products and forms vary by state, and some policies are issued on fronting paper rather than NEXT's own; no cyber, management liability or surety, and not designed for larger or higher-hazard accounts; phone support is weekday business hours only; the founder-CEO took on a second, group-wide role at ERGO in October 2026.
