Overview
Munich Re is the world's largest reinsurer, but in the U.S. it is also a sizable direct writer of business insurance. Its U.S. group was ranked No. 31 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $3.94 billion, based on NAIC market share data, about 0.81% of the national commercial market. It is the third-largest writer of aircraft coverage in the country, eighth in boiler and machinery (equipment breakdown) and tenth in fire. Its biggest commercial lines are other liability, fire, package policies and allied lines.
The NAIC group gathers several businesses that buyers know by different names:
- Munich Re Specialty – North America, run from Princeton, New Jersey: specialty casualty, property, surety, public entity, financial lines and MGA program business. It writes on American Alternative Insurance Corporation (AAIC), an admitted company, and on two Delaware surplus lines companies, The Princeton Excess and Surplus Lines Insurance Company and Bridgeway Insurance Company. Munich Reinsurance America, the reinsurance company, sits in the same group.
- HSB (The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company and HSB Specialty Insurance Company): equipment breakdown, cyber and specialty liability, much of it sold through other insurers.
- NEXT Insurance, now branded ERGO NEXT Insurance: the online small business insurer that ERGO, Munich Re's primary insurance arm, bought outright in 2025. Allstate sends its customers' non-auto business insurance quotes to ERGO NEXT.
- American Modern Insurance Group: specialty personal lines (manufactured homes, dwellings, boats, collector vehicles). It explains much of the gap between the group's $3.94 billion of commercial premium and its $5.85 billion all-lines total.
Munich Reinsurance Company, the parent, trades on Xetra and German exchanges (MUV2). Christoph Jurecka became group CEO on January 1, 2026. Apart from NEXT, everything is sold through brokers, agents, MGAs or other insurers.
History
Munich Re was founded in Munich in 1880. Its U.S. footprint was built by acquisition:
- 1996: bought American Re of Princeton, a reinsurer whose roots go back to 1917, for about $3.3 billion. It is now Munich Reinsurance America and the parent of AAIC and the surplus lines companies.
- 2007: bought The Midland Company, parent of American Modern Insurance Group.
- 2009: bought HSB Group from AIG on April 1 for €555 million.
- 2016–2019: started working with NEXT through its Digital Partners unit in 2016 and built a stake of about 27.5% by 2019.
- 2025: Munich Re signed a deal on March 20, 2025 to buy all of NEXT at a $2.6 billion valuation. ERGO, which already owned about 29%, closed it on July 1, 2025. NEXT reported $548 million of 2024 premium and more than 600,000 customers.
The next deal is pending. On August 19, 2026, Munich Re agreed to buy the cyber insurtech At-Bay at an enterprise value of $575 million. HSB will oversee it. HSB has backed At-Bay since its 2017 founding, and At-Bay wrote $278 million of gross premium in 2025. Closing depends on regulatory approvals and is expected in the first quarter of 2027.
Business insurance products
Specialty casualty and property. Munich Re Specialty writes primary and excess casualty for contractors, real estate, product manufacturers and distributors, and hospitality accounts (hotels, restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets). Excess capacity runs to $5 million, it prefers lead or first excess layers, and the minimum premium is $50,000. That puts it squarely in the middle market, not main street. Specialty property is written on ISO-based or manuscript forms, ground-up, primary, quota share or excess, for classes such as habitational, foundries, food processing, vacant buildings and tribal casinos. Its FAIR Plan Commercial Wrap adds up to $100 million of excess and difference in conditions cover over California and Colorado FAIR Plan commercial policies, with an equipment breakdown option.
Public entities. Public Entity Risk Solutions has worked in the sector for more than 40 years. It covers municipalities, counties and special districts, K-12 schools, colleges, transit authorities, religious and nonprofit organizations, and tribal organizations. Coverage includes general, public officials, school board, law enforcement and auto liability plus property, equipment breakdown and crime.
Surety, marine and other lines. Contract and commercial surety bonds up to $150 million per bond and $350 million per program, plus inland marine, ocean cargo, cyber and tech E&O, financial lines, healthcare and life science liability, and terrorism and political violence.
Programs and binding authorities. Much of the premium comes through MGAs. The U.S. Programs unit has more than 25 years of program experience, lets program administrators make many of their own choices on claims handling and rating systems, and lists builders risk, community associations, contractors, earthquake DIC and franchised auto dealers among its programs. A binding authority unit gives wholesalers and MGAs excess and surplus lines capacity from AAIC, Great Lakes Insurance SE (a German Munich Re company) and Lloyd's syndicates. AAIC's admitted lines also include workers' compensation, commercial auto, umbrella, aviation and crop.
Aviation. Munich Re Group companies supply 49.96% of the capacity in the Global Aerospace underwriting pool, according to Global Aerospace, and AAIC lists aviation among its admitted lines. See aviation insurance for business aircraft owners and operators.
Equipment breakdown and small business. HSB calls itself the leading equipment breakdown insurer in North America, with more than 600 commissioned inspectors. NEXT sells general liability, workers' comp and other small business coverage online.
Who it insures
The appetite is split by unit. Munich Re Specialty targets accounts that standard markets handle poorly: large and middle-market contractors and real estate, public entities, manufacturers, and E&S property. A small shop buying coverage online meets the group through NEXT. Many business owners meet HSB without knowing it, as the equipment breakdown or cyber coverage their own insurer adds to a package or business owner's policy; HSB markets those products to commercial and personal lines insurers as well as agents. Programs and binding authorities reach many niches, but the underwriting is done by the MGA.
How to buy
Munich Re Specialty works through selected retail and wholesale brokers and MGAs, and surplus lines business must go through a licensed surplus lines broker. There is no online quoting for its lines. Expect a full submission: a statement of values for property, loss runs, contracts and an underlying schedule for excess. Program and binding authority business is quoted by the MGA, often under its own brand, so check the declarations page to see which Munich Re company issued the policy.
HSB sells through agents and through partner insurers that attach its forms. NEXT is the exception. Owners can buy and manage policies online and download certificates of insurance themselves.
Claims
For Munich Re Specialty, AAIC and the Princeton surplus lines company, report new claims through the online first notice of loss form. Questions go to 888-729-2242 or [email protected], and catastrophe claims to 866-220-3505. Claims can also be faxed to 609-243-4558.
Program business is often handled by outside administrators. AAIC's site sends claims to ACM, Athens Administrators, Gallagher Bassett, Network Adjusters, Sedgwick or VFIS Claims Management (emergency services) depending on the policy number prefix. Look up the prefix before you call. Loss runs are requested by email ([email protected]) on the insured's letterhead with the 13-digit policy number.
HSB claims go to 888-472-5677 (888-HSB-LOSS) or by emailed notice-of-loss form.
Financial strength and ratings
On July 23, 2026, AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating of Munich Reinsurance Company and 18 subsidiaries, including Munich Reinsurance America, with a stable outlook. In the same review it withdrew the issuer rating of the holding company Munich Re America Corporation at the company's request. AAIC also reports an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best on its site. Munich Re US lists S&P at AA (Very Strong), affirmed April 30, 2025, and Fitch at AA (Very Strong), affirmed October 10, 2025, both stable. In August 2026, HSB said it holds AM Best's top rating, A++ (Superior).
Statutory results for the pooled U.S. companies (Munich Reinsurance America, AAIC, the two surplus lines companies and Digital Advantage) are mostly reinsurance and have been weak. Combined ratios were 100.9% for 2025 and 104.1% for 2024. The pool lost $388 million in 2025 on $8.35 billion of gross written premium. Policyholders' surplus rose to $6.83 billion at year-end 2025, with an RBC ratio of 337% for Munich Reinsurance America. The group as a whole earned €6.1 billion in 2025.
Strengths and weaknesses
Munich Re combines a top-rated global balance sheet with real specialist teams in public entity, surety, E&S property and equipment breakdown. The cost is fragmentation: many companies, many brands, and often an MGA or administrator between you and the carrier.
- Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best (affirmed July 2026) and AA from S&P and Fitch for Munich Reinsurance America, with HSB at A++. More than 40 years in public entity coverage and surety capacity up to $150 million per bond. National top-three aviation writer and HSB's equipment breakdown and engineering depth. NEXT gives owners an online option.
- Weaknesses: Broker-only for everything but NEXT, with $50,000 minimums on excess casualty. Claims contacts vary by unit and, for program business, by policy prefix and third-party administrator. Surplus lines policies from Princeton E&S, Bridgeway and Great Lakes generally fall outside state guaranty fund protection. The U.S. pooled companies ran combined ratios above 100% in 2024 and 2025.
