NEXT Insurance vs The Hartford
NEXT sells small policies online in about 10 minutes; The Hartford covers the same buyers plus middle market, with the top U.S. workers' comp book.
Verdict
NEXT Insurance and The Hartford both let a small business owner get a price online, which makes this a more natural comparison than it first looks. The difference is what sits behind the quote. NEXT, which has branded itself ERGO NEXT since January 2026 and has been wholly owned by Munich Re's ERGO since July 1, 2025, is built for microbusinesses and the self-employed: the first $1 million of liability limits and a few employees. It has no NAIC rank here. The Hartford ranked No. 6 by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums at $14.61 billion, is the No. 1 U.S. workers' comp writer, and also serves middle-market and specialty accounts.
On ratings, AM Best assigned NEXT A+ (Superior) in September 2025, a group rating that reflects Munich Re's support rather than NEXT's standalone results. The Hartford holds A+ (Superior) in its own right, affirmed July 2026, with AA- from S&P. At that grade the two are equal on paper.
Service model is the other split. NEXT is online-first: instant certificates and additional insureds, a 24/7 AI assistant, and phone support on weekdays only. It also places business through independent agents and embedded partners. The Hartford runs agents, online quoting and a sales line (weekdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET), so a growing business can stay with it as it adds payroll, vehicles and umbrella limits. NEXT's range of products is narrower: no cyber, D&O or surety is advertised. Price depends on trade, state and loss history, so quote both and compare.
Choose NEXT if
- You are a sole proprietor, handyman, trainer, consultant, cleaner or similar microbusiness who wants to buy general liability in one sitting.
- You need a certificate of insurance or an additional insured added quickly and want to do it yourself.
- Your trade is one of the 1,300 professions NEXT says it insures, and your state has the product you need (its BOP was in 41 states as of September 2025).
- You are comfortable with online-first service and weekday phone hours.
- You expect to keep limits and payroll small.
Choose The Hartford if
- You have employees and workers' comp is a major cost; The Hartford is the largest U.S. writer.
- You want a business owner's policy, with a discount of up to 10% when you also buy comp from The Hartford.
- You are growing toward the middle market, with a revenue over $10 million, or need umbrella, auto, cyber or professional liability from one carrier.
- You want the option of an independent agent reviewing exclusions and limits.
- Your risk is unusual and might need Maxum or Navigators through a wholesale broker.
