biBERK vs NEXT Insurance

Both sell small business insurance online. biBERK offers Berkshire A++ paper and umbrella; NEXT covers more trades and tools and equipment, rated A+.

Verdict

biBERK and NEXT Insurance are the two best-known direct-to-business sellers, and they solve the same problem: a small owner who wants to answer a questionnaire, pay and have a certificate in hand without an agent. Neither carries an NAIC commercial rank in this set. The meaningful differences are who owns the paper, how wide the product line runs, and how each handles the policy afterward.

biBERK is a wholly owned unit of Berkshire Hathaway, writing on Berkshire Hathaway Direct Insurance Company paper. Its site says each key Berkshire insurance subsidiary holds A++ (Superior) from AM Best, as of February 2026, and it says by skipping the broker it can charge up to 20% less than other insurers, which is the company's own claim. NEXT has been wholly owned by Munich Re's ERGO since July 1, 2025 and holds A+ (Superior) from AM Best, assigned September 2025 as a group rating reflecting Munich Re's support. Both are strong; A++ is the higher grade.

On product, biBERK sells workers' comp, a business owner's policy, general liability, E&O, commercial auto and umbrella, with cyber as an add-on capped at $1 million. NEXT lists general liability, BOP, comp, commercial property, auto, E&O, tools and equipment, product liability, EPLI and liquor liability, with no advertised umbrella. NEXT also sells through independent agents and embedded partners such as Allstate's site; biBERK is direct. Eligibility turns on trade and state, so run both quotes.

Choose biBERK if

  • You want Berkshire Hathaway paper and an A++ grade behind a small policy.
  • You need an umbrella in $1 million increments over your liability.
  • Commercial auto, including for-hire trucking add-ons such as cargo and trailer interchange, is part of the package.
  • You want to complete workers' comp audits and endorsement changes yourself online.
  • You know your coverage and limits and do not need an agent to review them.

Choose NEXT if

  • Your trade is on its list of more than 1,300 professions, especially small contractors and tradespeople.
  • You need tools and equipment cover, product liability, liquor liability or EPLI in the same account.
  • You want the option of an independent agent or partner platform placing it.
  • You want a stand-alone commercial property option and not only a BOP.
  • You would rather chat with licensed staff or an AI assistant than only call.

Cyber Add-on, up to $1 million Not advertised

Before binding either, check that each line you need is offered in your state; both say availability varies, and the BOP at NEXT had reached 41 states as of September 2025. Look at the issuing company on the declarations page, since some NEXT policies are written on fronting paper. Because no agent reviews your contracts, read the lease or subcontract for required endorsements, and check the exclusions. Higher-hazard classes may be declined by either.
