Overview
Erie Insurance, which styles itself ERIE, is a reciprocal insurer in Erie, Pennsylvania, that sells auto, home, business and life insurance only through independent agents in 12 states and D.C. Its group was ranked No. 30 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $3.96 billion, based on NAIC market share data, or about 0.82% of the national commercial market. It is the ninth-largest writer of commercial multiple peril (business package) insurance in the country.
Business insurance is a minority of a mostly personal lines company: commercial lines were 29% of the Exchange's 2025 written premium, and personal auto and homeowners the other 71%. The main commercial products are package policies, commercial auto and workers' compensation.
The structure matters. The insurer is Erie Insurance Exchange, owned by its policyholders (called subscribers). Erie Indemnity Company, which trades on Nasdaq as ERIE, is the Exchange's attorney-in-fact: it sells, underwrites and services the business in return for a management fee of up to 25% of the Exchange's premiums, which its board kept at 25% for 2026. The NAIC group comprises the Exchange, Erie Insurance Company, Erie Insurance Company of New York, Erie Insurance Property & Casualty Company and Flagship City Insurance Company.
History
Henry Orth (H.O.) Hirt and Oliver Grover (O.G.) Crawford left the Pennsylvania Indemnity Exchange, raised $31,000 from more than 90 stockholders, and opened Erie Insurance Exchange on April 20, 1925, writing auto insurance. Their slogan, "Above all in sERvIcE," is still the company tagline. ERIE first expanded beyond Pennsylvania in 1953 (Maryland and D.C.), entered commercial insurance in 1963 with its Pioneer Business Protector Policy, and started Erie Family Life in 1967.
Erie Indemnity's stock became publicly available in 1993 and listed on Nasdaq in 1995, the year ERIE signed its 1,000th independent agency. The company entered the Fortune 500 in 2003 and Kentucky, its 12th state, in 2014. In 2024 the Exchange passed $10 billion of premium and 7 million policies in force, and in 2025 it marked its centennial.
The past two years have been eventful. On June 7, 2025, ERIE detected unusual network activity and proactively shut down its systems for nearly a month while agents and employees kept taking loss calls and handling claims; full operations resumed on July 7, 2025, with ERIE reporting no evidence that sensitive personal or financial data was taken. In September 2025 AM Best cut its rating to A from A+ (see below). In February 2026 ERIE announced that Tim NeCastro, CEO since 2016, will retire on December 31, 2026; the board's search for a successor was under way, with no successor announced as of early October 2026.
Business insurance products
ERIE's small business core is the ErieSecure Business policy, a package of property and liability with tiers by business size, discounts for franchises, sprinklers and fire alarms, and options such as Guaranteed Replacement Cost and Extended Replacement Cost on buildings (see insurance to value: setting the right building limit for why rebuilding cost matters). Around it:
- Commercial property and general liability, sold as package coverage.
- Business auto, rebuilt in 2025 as Business Auto 2.0 in eight states; see commercial auto insurance: what it covers and what it leaves out.
- Workers' compensation with employers liability and other-states coverage for temporary work outside the home state, plus risk control consultants and return-to-work help.
- Business umbrella, Cyber Suite (data breach and cyberattack coverage), employment practices liability, crime, theft and fraud coverage, and abuse and sexual molestation coverage.
- Commercial and contract bonds.
- Key person life and business continuation insurance, and Lifeworks voluntary group life that employees pay for.
Who it insures
ERIE publishes industry packages for contractors, Restaurant insurance, retail shops, Manufacturer insurance, wholesaler-distributors, auto services, offices and professional services, technology businesses, religious organizations, breweries, wineries and distilleries, and veterinarians and pet care. Its customers are mostly small businesses; the J.D. Power study it leads covers businesses with 50 or fewer employees.
It writes only in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and D.C. A business with locations or fleets outside that footprint will need another carrier for those exposures, though the workers' comp policy's other-states coverage gives limited temporary protection for new operations elsewhere.
How to buy
Only through an independent ERIE agent; there are more than 14,000. The website's business quote form collects basic details (business type, employees, years in business, fleet size and current carrier) and passes them to a local agent; it does not issue a price online. ERIE says it aims to be the lead insurer in each agency it appoints, which it believes improves its chances of seeing agents' most desirable accounts.
Agents quote ErieSecure Business in real time, and ERIE says 92% of policy changes on Business Auto 2.0 are processed instantly. Policyholders use an online account and the ERIE app for billing, policy documents and claim tracking. For billing and policy questions, call Customer Care at 800-458-0811 or contact your agent.
Claims
Report a business claim to your local agent or at 800-367-3743 (option 4 starts a new claim; option 3 is workers' comp); ERIE advertises 24/7 support on that line for auto, workers' comp and home claims. A claims handler is assigned to inspect and estimate the damage; ERIE asks business customers for pre-loss inventory records, receipts for emergency repairs and contact details for anyone involved, and lets them choose their own contractor. Claimants can text their claim handler directly and see status, payments and adjuster contacts in the app.
Financial strength and ratings
On September 5, 2025, AM Best downgraded the financial strength rating of ERIE's property and casualty companies to A (Excellent) from A+ (Superior) and revised the outlook to stable. AM Best cited multi-year surplus declines driven by large weather losses and rising auto and homeowners claim severity, a downward trend in risk-adjusted capital, rising underwriting leverage and mixed reserve development, while noting rate and non-rate actions and a catastrophe reinsurance program restructured with significantly higher limits. Erie Family Life is rated A (Excellent).
The Exchange's combined ratio improved to 104.9% in 2025 from 110.4% in 2024, so it still lost money on underwriting. Direct written premium grew to $13.0 billion and policyholder surplus rose to $10.1 billion, while policies in force fell 1.1%. Erie Indemnity earned $559 million in 2025.
Service is ERIE's standout. It ranked first in J.D. Power's U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study in 2025 (723 points) and again in 2026, when it scored 760 and also ranked highest in trust.
Strengths and weaknesses
ERIE offers what many small business owners want, a local agent, a broad package and strong claims service, at the cost of a limited footprint and a balance sheet that has taken real weather losses.
- Strengths: No. 1 in J.D. Power's small commercial study in both 2025 and 2026. Ninth nationally in commercial package premium, with ErieSecure Business options such as Guaranteed Replacement Cost. Broad small business shelf including EPLI, cyber, bonds, abuse coverage and key person life. Policyholder-owned reciprocal with $10.1 billion of surplus at the end of 2025.
- Weaknesses: Only 12 states and D.C. AM Best downgrade to A (Excellent) in September 2025 after years of underwriting losses, with a 104.9% combined ratio in 2025. The June 2025 cyber incident shut systems for about a month. A CEO change at the end of 2026, and no direct online buying.
