Overview

Cincinnati Insurance is the trade name for The Cincinnati Insurance Companies, the property-casualty, specialty and life insurers owned by Cincinnati Financial Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed holding company based in Fairfield, Ohio. The group ranked No. 22 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $6.32 billion, based on NAIC market share data. It ranks sixth nationally in burglary and theft and eighth in commercial multiple peril, the line that holds package policies. Commercial lines are a little under half of the company's business; it also writes a large personal lines book (including high-net-worth homes through Cincinnati Private Client) and life insurance.

The group's insurers are The Cincinnati Insurance Company, The Cincinnati Casualty Company and The Cincinnati Indemnity Company (the standard market), The Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters Insurance Company (E&S) and The Cincinnati Life Insurance Company. Cincinnati Re writes assumed reinsurance, and Cincinnati Global manages Lloyd's Syndicate 318 in London.

Cincinnati sells only through independent agencies. At year-end 2025 it had 2,292 agency relationships with 3,702 reporting locations in 46 states. Stephen M. Spray is president and CEO. The company employed 5,705 people at the end of 2025, including 2,195 field associates who work from home in the territories they serve.

History

Four independent agents, John J. Schiff, Robert Schiff, Chester Field and Harry Turner, founded The Cincinnati Insurance Company in 1950, and it issued its first policy on January 25, 1951. It expanded into Kentucky and Indiana in 1955. Cincinnati Financial Corporation was formed as the holding company in 1968, and its stock joined the S&P 500 in 1997.

The modern shape came in steps. The E&S company and CSU Producer Resources were incorporated in 2007, and Cincinnati entered the excess and surplus lines market on January 1, 2008. Cincinnati Re followed in 2015. In 2019 Cincinnati Financial bought Lloyd's Syndicate 318 and its managing agency, now Cincinnati Global Underwriting Agency. In 2023 the high-net-worth personal book was rebranded Cincinnati Private Client. The company marked 75 years in 2025, the same year the January Southern California wildfires produced the largest catastrophe loss in its history, an estimated $942 million before reinsurance, mostly from personal lines.

Business insurance products

Cincinnati says it can cover about 75% of the typical insurable risks of its agents' clients. Its commercial lines are:

  • Commercial casualty: general liability, umbrella, professional and employment practices coverages, often inside a package.
  • Commercial property: buildings, contents and business income, with inland marine for builders risk, cargo and equipment.
  • Commercial auto and workers' compensation.
  • Management liability and surety: D&O for nonprofits, private companies, health care organizations, financial institutions (about 110 banks and thrifts, none over $1 billion in assets) and schools; contract and commercial surety and fidelity bonds. See surety bonds explained: how they differ from insurance.
  • Machinery and equipment: boiler, machinery and production equipment breakdown cover. See equipment breakdown insurance: what it covers that property insurance does not.
  • Cyber: offered as an option on several policies, with all related premium ceded to a reinsurer ($54 million in 2025).
  • Small business: a businessowner's policy that bundles property, business income and liability (What is a business owner's policy (BOP)?).
  • E&S: Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters writes small to midsized hard-to-place risks, average premium about $10,000, mostly casualty with limits of $1 million or less, for contractors, manufacturers, real estate, retail, consultants and bars, plus property for vacant buildings, habitational, restaurants and higher-hazard manufacturing.

The signature feature is the three-year commercial package policy. Rates for property, general liability, inland marine and crime are generally fixed for the term, while auto, workers' comp, professional liability and most umbrella coverages are re-rated each anniversary. The company estimates that about 75% of 2025 commercial premium was subject to annual rating or written on one-year terms anyway.

Who it insures

The core is small and midsized business. About 70% of in-force commercial policies carry annual premiums of $10,000 or less, though policies over $100,000 make up roughly 40% of commercial premium, and the average commercial policy is about $19,000. Cincinnati is adding key-account capacity for larger risks.

Construction weighs heavily: in 2025 an estimated 39% of its general liability premium and 38% of its workers' comp premium came from construction. Its industry pages also name real estate (apartments, condo associations, offices), distributors and retailers, health and human services (dentists, funeral homes, senior living, veterinarians), recreation (craft breweries, distilleries, wineries, golf clubs, restaurants) and institutions (schools, banks, nonprofits, religious institutions, water utilities). See General contractor insurance and Brewery, winery and distillery insurance.

Its largest commercial states in 2025 were Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York, Virginia, Missouri, Tennessee and Michigan. Standard commercial lines are offered in 44 states; E&S is also available in California, where standard commercial lines are not.

How to buy

You buy Cincinnati through an appointed independent agent; its site sends quote requests to a find-an-agent search, and there is no online quoting. Underwriting is local: field marketing representatives write new commercial business and select agencies, and headquarters underwriters handle renewals and endorsements. E&S business also comes only through Cincinnati's own agencies, placed through its in-house brokerage, CSU Producer Resources, rather than through outside wholesalers. Policyholders can pay and service policies online through the sign-in portal.

Claims

Report a business claim 24 hours a day at 877-242-2544, online through the policyholder sign-in, or through your agent. Cincinnati's model is person-to-person: about 940 field claims representatives work from home, are assigned to specific agencies and can handle a claim from nearly anywhere. Catastrophe teams drawn from the field staff can pay claims on the day they inspect a loss. A 48-person special investigations unit handles suspected fraud, which can be reported at 844-928-0252.

Financial strength and ratings

Cincinnati Financial's 2025 annual report lists its standard market companies, as of February 20, 2026, at A+ (Superior) from AM Best (last affirmed February 13, 2025), AA- (Very Strong) from Fitch (upgraded from A+ on September 3, 2025), A1 (Good) from Moody's (affirmed October 2, 2025) and A+ (Strong) from S&P (affirmed June 4, 2024), all with stable outlooks. The E&S company is rated A+ by AM Best. The company's ratings page still showed the same ratings in 2026.

Commercial lines ran a 90.3% statutory combined ratio in 2025, against 92.2% in 2024. 2026 has been rougher: the commercial lines combined ratio was 104.1% in the second quarter and 101.3% for the first half, driven partly by catastrophe losses, including Ohio storms. Standard market surplus was $9.75 billion at year-end 2025.

In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study, Cincinnati tied Philadelphia Insurance for second (714) behind Erie, its first appearance in the rankings.

Strengths and weaknesses

Cincinnati is a high-touch agency carrier with strong balance sheet ratings, a reputation for local claims handling and an unusual multi-year package. Its weak points are reach and access: no direct or online channel, no standard commercial lines in California, and results that swing with weather because so much of its book is property.

  • Strengths: A+ from AM Best and AA- from Fitch; three-year package policies; field claims reps assigned to agencies; tied for second in J.D. Power's 2025 small commercial study; its own E&S company for accounts the standard market declines.
  • Weaknesses: Must be bought through an appointed independent agent; standard commercial lines in 44 states, not including California; cyber is an add-on rather than a standalone specialty; 2026 commercial combined ratio above 100% in the first half after heavy storm losses.

Agents most often compare Cincinnati with Erie Insurance, Auto-Owners, Selective Insurance and The Hanover for small and midsized package accounts.
