Cincinnati Insurance vs Erie Insurance

Cincinnati offers three-year packages and E&S through independent agents in 44 states; ERIE leads J.D. Power for small business but writes in 12 states and D.C.

Verdict

Cincinnati Insurance and Erie Insurance are the two agency-only regionals that independent agents most often put side by side for small and midsize package accounts. Cincinnati ranked No. 22 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, at $6.32 billion (NAIC). ERIE ranked No. 30 at $3.96 billion, and it is the ninth-largest writer of commercial multiple peril. Neither sells direct: Cincinnati works through about 2,300 agency relationships, ERIE through more than 14,000 independent agents, and ERIE's online quote form simply routes you to a local agent.

The companies are built differently. Cincinnati is a Nasdaq-listed commercial and personal lines group with field underwriters and field claims representatives assigned to agencies, a three-year commercial package for property, general liability, inland marine and crime, and its own E&S company. ERIE is a policyholder-owned reciprocal run by Erie Indemnity, with commercial at only 29% of its 2025 premium and a footprint of 12 states and D.C.

Service and balance sheet point in different directions. ERIE ranked No. 1 in J.D. Power's U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study in 2025 (723) and 2026 (760); Cincinnati tied Philadelphia Insurance for second in 2025 (714). But AM Best downgraded ERIE to A (Excellent) in September 2025, while Cincinnati holds A+ (Superior), listed February 2026. Cincinnati's commercial combined ratio ran 101.3% in the first half of 2026. Rates depend on class and loss history, so have your agent quote both.

Choose Cincinnati Insurance if

  • You are outside ERIE's states, or need locations in several states; Cincinnati writes standard commercial lines in 44 states.
  • You are a contractor, builder or real estate owner and want an insurer whose book leans toward construction.
  • You want rates held through a three-year package on property, liability, inland marine and crime.
  • A standard decline could be followed by the same group's E&S company, through your agent.
  • A higher AM Best rating matters for a lender or contract.

Choose ERIE if

  • Your business and agent are in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin or D.C.
  • Claims service is your priority, and you have 50 or fewer employees, the group J.D. Power's study covers.
  • You want options like Guaranteed Replacement Cost, EPLI, a Cyber Suite or key person life on the package.
  • You prefer a policyholder-owned reciprocal and can accept the A (Excellent) rating.

Before choosing, check which company issues the policy, whether rates are fixed for three years or re-rated annually by line (Cincinnati re-rates auto, comp, professional and most umbrella each year), and what the replacement cost terms are.
