Overview
Auto-Owners Insurance is a Lansing, Michigan mutual that sells only through independent agents and is one of the largest writers of small and midsize commercial accounts in the country. The Auto-Owners group ranked No. 16 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $7.64 billion, based on NAIC market share data. It ranks sixth nationally in commercial multiple peril (package policies that combine property and liability), eighth in commercial auto and eighth in fire insurance. Its biggest commercial lines in 2025 were package policies ($2.75 billion) and commercial auto ($2.19 billion).
Business insurance is less than half the story. The NAIC group wrote $17.03 billion across all lines in 2025, and home, personal auto and life are a large share of the book. That matters to a business buyer because the 2024 rating action described below was driven by personal auto, not by commercial results.
The NAIC group covers more than the Auto-Owners brand. Alongside Auto-Owners Insurance Company it includes the stock subsidiaries Owners Insurance, Home-Owners Insurance, Property-Owners Insurance and Southern-Owners Insurance (Florida); Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company, an excess and surplus lines carrier in Goldsboro, North Carolina; the Concord Group companies in Bedford, New Hampshire (Concord General Mutual, Green Mountain, State Mutual, Sunapee Mutual Fire and Vermont Accident); and Capital Insurance Group in Monterey, California (California Capital, Eagle West, Monterey Insurance and Nevada Capital). Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company sits outside the property-casualty count.
History
Vern V. Moulton and four associates organized Auto-Owners in July 1916 in a single room in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The company moved to Lansing in 1917, and Moulton served as president from 1929 until late 1957. Auto-Owners did not leave Michigan until December 1935, when it began writing in Indiana. It formed Auto-Owners Life in 1966 and moved into its current Lansing home office at the end of 1976.
Growth outside the core footprint has come mostly through affiliations in the last decade, according to the company's 2025 annual report:
- 2016: acquired Atlantic Casualty, founded in 1983, which writes non-standard commercial risks through managing general agencies.
- 2017: began its affiliation with the Concord Group, a mutual founded in 1928 that writes in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
- 2019: acquired Capital Insurance Group, which dates to 1898 and writes agricultural, commercial and personal business in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. The deal was announced in February 2019 and closed that May.
Auto-Owners has never demutualized or listed shares. The 2025 annual report names Jamie P. Whisnant as chairman and CEO.
Business insurance products
Auto-Owners builds most small commercial accounts around a package policy, with industry-specific coverage sets the company publishes for contractors, garages, manufacturers, offices, restaurants and retail and service businesses. Highlights from its own product pages:
- Contractors: general liability, property, inland marine for tools and equipment, builders risk, owners and contractors protective (OCP) liability, contractors E&O, and blanket additional insured options. The company says waiver of subrogation is available at no additional cost.
- Garage program: garage liability, garagekeepers coverage (including an actual loss sustained option), a dealer's blanket reporting form for inventory, mechanics E&O and false pretense coverage, for car, boat, RV, off-road and farm implement dealers and repair shops.
- Restaurants: liquor liability, spoilage, food contamination, equipment breakdown and business income.
- Professional liability: narrow E&O forms for professions most carriers ignore, such as funeral directors, florists, printers, optometrists, pharmacists, tax preparers and travel agencies.
- Commercial auto: a commercial auto program with hired and non-owned auto and road trouble service, plus a separate motor carrier program for trucking risks.
- Workers' compensation: standard workers' comp and employers liability, with voluntary compensation and partners/officers endorsements. Listed credits include drug-free workplace, group (chamber of commerce and trade association) and paid-in-full discounts.
- Bonds: contract, license and permit, court, public official and fidelity bonds, including ERISA bonds.
- Add-ons: cyber liability, employment practices liability, employee dishonesty and commercial umbrella.
For hard-to-place risks, Atlantic Casualty writes general liability, property, garage, inland marine and ocean marine on a non-admitted basis through MGAs.
Who it insures
The appetite is main-street and middle-market business in the 26 states where Auto-Owners itself operates: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. The company says it handles accounts "from small town businesses to large multi-state operations," but its published programs point to contractors, Restaurant insurance, auto dealers and repair shops, light manufacturers, offices, retailers, motor carriers and farms.
A business outside those states reaches the group only through an affiliate (Concord in northern New England, Capital Insurance Group in the West) or through Atlantic Casualty in the surplus lines market. Auto-Owners does not publish a list of excluded classes; your agent will know where its underwriters draw the line.
How to buy
You cannot buy Auto-Owners directly. Every quote goes through an appointed independent agency, and the company's agency locator is the starting point. Its 2025 annual report counts about 50,000 agents. Auto-Owners advertises multi-policy discounts that can include its life insurance products.
There is no online quoting or bind for business owners. After the sale, policyholders can use the online access portal and mobile app to pay bills, view policy documents and coverage forms, get proof of insurance, report monthly dealer inventory and track claims. Certificates of insurance come from your agent.
Claims
Auto-Owners still runs its "No Problem" claim model through the agent: you report a claim to your local agent first. If the agent is unavailable, the after-hours claim line is 888-252-4626; for workers' comp it runs weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and around the clock on weekends and holidays. The company says it has more than 100 claim offices across its 26 states, while many competitors have centralized adjusters into a few hubs.
For work injuries, the A-O Injury Hotline (844-334-6475) gives employees 24/7 access to medical triage; if treatment is recommended, the hotline starts the claim. The company keeps storm teams and mobile response vehicles for catastrophes and pays claims by direct deposit, Venmo, PayPal or a claim card. Its loss control consultants handle on-site assessments, safety program reviews and loss analysis, and policyholders get free access to a library of more than 650 safety and HR training videos.
Financial strength and ratings
AM Best downgraded Auto-Owners Insurance Company and its four wholly owned property-casualty subsidiaries to A+ (Superior) from A++ (Superior) on October 31, 2024, and cut the issuer credit rating to "aa" from "aa+," with a stable outlook. AM Best tied the downgrade to weak underwriting results since 2022, driven by claims inflation in private passenger auto, and noted the group had returned to profitability in the first half of 2024. The cut followed a move to a negative outlook in October 2023. In the same 2024 action, AM Best affirmed Atlantic Casualty at A+ and Capital Insurance Group at A (Excellent). A+ remains inside AM Best's top "Superior" category (see AM Best ratings explained for business buyers).
The 2025 annual report shows the recovery: group net written premiums of $16.83 billion (up more than $1.1 billion), a 90.06% combined ratio, a $1.5 billion underwriting profit and policyholder surplus above $18.2 billion. Policies in force fell 1.7%, to about 6.2 million, and Atlantic Casualty's written premium dropped 10.3% as it repositioned in the E&S market.
J.D. Power's U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study has tracked a sharp turnaround in service scores. Auto-Owners finished last of 15 ranked insurers in 2024 (665), posted one of the three largest score gains in the 2025 study, and ranked fourth in the 2026 study with a score of 726, behind Erie, Chubb and Allstate.
Strengths and weaknesses
Auto-Owners is a capital-rich mutual with a local-agent, local-adjuster model and broad package programs for main-street classes. The trade-offs are geography, a 2024 rating cut and no direct or online buying.
- Strengths: Policyholder surplus of more than $18.2 billion and a 90.06% combined ratio in 2025; top-10 national positions in package, commercial auto and fire; more than 100 local claim offices and a 24/7 nurse triage line for comp; niche programs (garage, restaurant, unusual professional E&O) that many regional carriers do not offer.
- Weaknesses: Core company writes in only 26 states; AM Best cut its rating from A++ to A+ in October 2024 because of personal auto losses; no online quoting, so you must work through an appointed agent; its J.D. Power small commercial scores were the lowest of ranked carriers as recently as 2024.
Buyers comparing regional mutuals usually look at Erie Insurance, Acuity and Cincinnati Insurance alongside it.
