Overview

Selective is a New Jersey commercial lines carrier that calls itself a "super-regional": it sells standard commercial insurance through independent agents in 38 states and D.C., and surplus lines coverage nationwide. The group was ranked No. 27 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $4.82 billion, based on NAIC market share data, or about 0.99% of the national commercial market. It ranks fifth in the country in products liability and tenth in boiler and machinery (equipment breakdown).

Commercial lines are the business. Standard Commercial Lines made up 79% of Selective's $4.9 billion of 2025 net premiums written, excess and surplus lines 13%, and standard personal lines 8%. Selective is also the fourth-largest "Write Your Own" carrier in the National Flood Insurance Program, according to the company.

The NAIC group is 10 insurance companies, including Selective Insurance Company of America, Selective Way, Selective Casualty, Selective Fire and Casualty, regional companies for New York, New England, South Carolina and the Southeast, and Mesa Underwriters Specialty Insurance Company (MUSIC), the surplus lines carrier. The parent, Selective Insurance Group, Inc., trades on Nasdaq as SIGI. John J. Marchioni is chairman, president and CEO.

History

Selective dates to 1926, when Daniel L.B. Smith, who ran general stores in Sussex County, New Jersey, and a small insurance agency out of one of them, put up money with colleagues to form Selected Risks Insurance Company in Branchville, New Jersey. It became a stock company in 1928, added general liability, workers' compensation and property lines in 1931, and spread into neighboring Mid-Atlantic states from 1936. Fidelity and surety bonds followed in 1975.

The modern company is built on two ideas from the 1990s and 2000s: underwriters and claims staff based in the field near agents, and agency technology. Selective opened its Richmond, Virginia, service center for small business in 2001, crossed $1 billion of net premiums written in 2002 and launched its commercial lines rating and issuance system in 2003.

In 2011 it bought two contract binding authority E&S operations, Alterra's and MUSIC, now combined as Mesa Underwriters Specialty Insurance Company, which gave it a 50-state surplus lines platform. Since 2017 it has added 16 states to its standard commercial footprint, including Vermont, Idaho and Alabama in 2022; Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and West Virginia in 2024; and Kansas in 2025. Marchioni succeeded Gregory Murphy as CEO in February 2020 and added the chairman's role in May 2022. In 2026 Selective marked its 100th year and opened a new corporate headquarters in Short Hills, New Jersey.

Business insurance products

Small business. A business owner's policy, general liability, commercial property, commercial auto, workers' compensation, cyber liability and commercial flood, with umbrella, inland marine and Selective's GreenPac property enhancement as add-ons. Selective says it writes small business policies for more than 400 industry types.

Middle and large accounts. Package, auto, comp and umbrella programs with management liability (D&O, EPL), errors and omissions, crime and fidelity, builders risk, product recall expense, abuse and molestation, crisis response and data compromise coverage. Surety bonds are a small but long-standing line (about 1% of 2025 commercial direct premium).

Excess and surplus lines (MUSIC). E&S property and casualty for small and midsize businesses with hard-to-place exposures in more than 1,000 classes, written through about 80 wholesale general agents with limited binding authority. The average premium is about $6,000 per policyholder. Like all excess and surplus lines coverage, it is not backed by state guaranty funds.

Flood. NFIP policies through the Write Your Own program, sold by about 6,520 distribution partners in all 50 states; see Commercial flood insurance: NFIP limits and private options.

Policyholders get free risk management services: safety inspections and site visits, abuse-prevention training, fleet management help, product recall notification and ergonomics tools.

Who it insures

By 2025 direct premium, Selective's commercial book was about 43% contractors, 26% mercantile and services, 16% community and public services, and 14% Manufacturer insurance and wholesalers. Its industry pages also name auto repair shops, Private school insurance, professional offices, Restaurant insurance, retail stores, hotels, municipalities and emergency services, religious institutions, social service organizations, nursing homes and assisted living, golf courses and technology companies.

The standard commercial footprint is 38 states and D.C. — AL, AZ, CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, MA, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV and WY. It does not write standard commercial lines in California, Texas or Florida; businesses there can only reach Selective through MUSIC on a surplus lines basis. The company says it wants a "near national" footprint over time.

How to buy

Through an agent. Selective sells standard lines only through independent agents (about 1,680 distribution partners at roughly 2,940 office locations at the end of 2025, with 100 new agency appointments in the first half of 2026), and E&S only through wholesalers. There is no direct online quote; Selective's site has a find-an-agent tool by ZIP code. Agents quote and issue small business policies through Selective's own systems, with underwriting service from its Richmond center (877-744-3125 for commercial policies).

After the sale, the MySelective account and mobile app handle bill payment, claim reporting and documents, and the app's Risk Management Center (added in 2024) gives business policyholders safety tools. Expect premium audits on comp and GL; Selective's site has a premium audit section explaining the process.

Claims

Report commercial claims 24/7 at 866-455-9969 or through a MySelective account or the mobile app. Flood claims go to 877-348-0552 (weekdays 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET). A "Find a Claim" tool returns the adjuster's contact details from the claim number and date of loss or policy number. Claims staff work from the field, as underwriters do, which is the "high touch" half of Selective's pitch. For comp, Nurse Triage 24 connects injured workers with registered nurses who advise on treatment, and TuMeke Ergonomics helps employers identify and correct risky worker movements.

Financial strength and ratings

AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating and "aa-" issuer credit rating of Selective's pooled insurers, including MUSIC, in December 2025, with a stable outlook. AM Best rated the balance sheet strongest but cited elevated catastrophe exposure and consecutive years of adverse reserve development as limiting factors. Selective's July 2026 investor presentation lists A from S&P, A2 from Moody's and A+ from Fitch.

Results swung with reserves. In 2024, unfavorable prior-year casualty reserve development added 7.1 points to the combined ratio, which hit 103.0%, and net income fell to $197.8 million. In 2025 the combined ratio improved to 97.2%, net income was $457.2 million, and net premiums written grew 5% to $4.87 billion. Standard Commercial Lines still ran a 98.3% combined ratio in 2025, with commercial auto loss costs rising. In the second quarter of 2026, net premiums written fell 5% as Selective cut underperforming business, with a 98.0% combined ratio. See loss reserves and reserve development: why they matter to buyers for why reserve charges matter to a buyer.

Strengths and weaknesses

Selective is a well-rated, agent-centric commercial carrier with a broad product shelf and a genuine field presence. The concern has been profitability: two years of reserve charges and tight commercial lines margins, which show up for buyers as rate increases and tighter underwriting.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed December 2025. Field-based underwriters and claims staff close to agents. Unusual coverages for a regional carrier, including product recall expense and abuse and molestation, plus a 50-state E&S option through MUSIC. National No. 5 in products liability.
  • Weaknesses: Standard commercial lines in only 38 states, with no admitted presence in California, Texas or Florida. Adverse reserve development in 2024 and earlier, which AM Best flagged. Renewal pure price increases averaged 9.5% in 2025, and Selective is shedding business it considers underpriced. No direct online buying.
