Auto-Owners Insurance vs Erie Insurance

Auto-Owners is the bigger mutual, in 26 states with broad niche programs; ERIE is a 12-state reciprocal that tops J.D. Power small commercial rankings.

Verdict

Auto-Owners Insurance and Erie Insurance are policyholder-owned, agent-only carriers that win the same Main Street accounts. Auto-Owners ranked No. 16 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, at $7.64 billion (NAIC), sixth in commercial multiple peril, eighth in commercial auto and eighth in fire. ERIE ranked No. 30 at $3.96 billion, ninth in commercial multiple peril. Both are mostly personal lines companies by total premium; commercial was 29% of the ERIE Exchange's 2025 written premium.

Structure differs. Auto-Owners is a Michigan mutual that writes in 26 states itself, with about 50,000 agents, and extends through affiliates (Concord, Capital Insurance Group) and Atlantic Casualty, which writes E&S through managing general agencies. ERIE is a reciprocal managed by Erie Indemnity for a fee of up to 25% of premiums; it has more than 14,000 agents in 12 states and D.C. and no E&S arm.

Service scores and ratings pull apart. ERIE ranked No. 1 in J.D. Power's small commercial study in 2025 (723) and 2026 (760). Auto-Owners finished last of 15 in 2024 (665) and climbed to fourth in 2026 (726). On ratings, AM Best cut Auto-Owners to A+ (Superior) from A++ in October 2024, because of personal auto losses, and cut ERIE to A (Excellent) from A+ in September 2025. Which is better depends on your state, trade and agent, so have the agent quote both.

Choose Auto-Owners if

  • You are in one of its 26 states and outside ERIE's footprint, such as Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri or Colorado.
  • You need a niche program: garage and garagekeepers, restaurant, contractors with OCP liability, or a narrow professional E&O form.
  • Commercial auto or motor carrier cover matters; commercial auto is its second-largest line at $2.19 billion.
  • You want an agent-first claim model with more than 100 local claim offices.

Choose ERIE if

  • You are in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin or D.C.
  • You have 50 or fewer employees and rank service highest; ERIE led J.D. Power in 2025 and 2026.
  • You want the ErieSecure Business package with Guaranteed Replacement Cost options, plus Cyber Suite, EPLI and key person life.
  • You value claims texting and app-based claim tracking.

Before choosing, ask which company issues the policy, particularly with Auto-Owners affiliates and Atlantic Casualty, which is non-admitted.
