Acuity vs Auto-Owners Insurance
Acuity is a Midwest mutual with deep trucking and A+ ratings from two agencies; Auto-Owners is larger, package-focused and in 26 states.
Verdict
Acuity and Auto-Owners Insurance are both policyholder-owned mutuals with A+ (Superior) ratings from AM Best, selling through independent agents in the Midwest and other regions. Auto-Owners is the larger commercial writer: No. 16 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written at $7.64 billion (NAIC), against Acuity at No. 38 and $2.57 billion. Auto-Owners' biggest commercial line is commercial multiple peril, the package business, at $2.75 billion; Acuity's is commercial auto at $1.05 billion, most of it trucking.
That is the real difference. Acuity is a trucking specialist among the regionals, from owner-operators to larger fleets, with motor truck cargo, trailer interchange, bobtail and deadhead coverage and motor carrier filings. Auto-Owners also writes commercial auto ($2.19 billion, No. 8 nationally) and a separate motor carrier program, but its identity is the broad package and niche classes: garages, restaurants, contractors, unusual professional E&O.
Ratings are close. AM Best affirmed Acuity at A+ in March 2026, and S&P reaffirmed A+ in November 2025. AM Best cut Auto-Owners from A++ to A+ in October 2024. On service, Auto-Owners ranked fourth in J.D. Power's 2026 small commercial study (726), after last place in 2024; Acuity is not listed in its profile. Auto-Owners has an E&S company in Atlantic Casualty; Acuity has no E&S or wholesale outlet. Price depends on class and loss history, so have your agent quote both.
Choose Acuity if
- You run a trucking company, from owner-operator to a larger fleet, and want one carrier for liability, physical damage, cargo and filings.
- You are a contractor, manufacturer, distributor or retailer in its Midwest-centered footprint and want a mutual with A+ ratings from AM Best and S&P.
- You want a free 24/7 nurse helpline for workers' comp injuries.
- You can accept a carrier not licensed in California, Florida, New York or New Jersey.
Choose Auto-Owners if
- You want a broad package for main-street classes: restaurants, garages and dealers, contractors, offices and retailers.
- You need a niche professional E&O form, a farm program, or surety bonds from the same group.
- You are in one of its 26 states, including Florida, where Acuity is not licensed.
- A hard-to-place risk may need the group's E&S company, through a managing general agency.
