Overview
Vouch is an insurance broker. It does not issue policies and, since its 2025 deal with Hiscox, it no longer owns the underwriting business or the insurer it built. Its legal disclosures say Vouch is the marketing name for Vouch Group, Inc. and its affiliates, and that insurance is brokered by Vouch Specialty Insurance Services, LLC, which is appointed with various carriers. The policy you buy is issued by whichever insurer Vouch places it with; Vouch says it has access to more than 80 carriers, and its industry pages promote "exclusive carrier terms and conditions." Under the 2025 agreement it also has a multi-year distribution deal with Hiscox, so Hiscox and the Corix products Hiscox bought are among the markets it uses.
How it is paid: Vouch Specialty earns a commission on each policy sold and, per its disclosures (effective August 6, 2025), may also be paid based on the performance of the products it sells, which is contingent commission in plain terms. Card and ACH transaction fees may be passed through to you where the law allows; wire and check avoid them. Premium financing is offered through Ascend. Claims advocacy is included at no extra cost for clients. how commercial insurance brokers get paid explains these arrangements.
Vouch is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and says it insures more than 6,000 companies. It is headquartered in San Francisco.
History
Sam Hodges, a repeat founder, and Travis Hedge, who came from venture capital, started Vouch in San Francisco in 2018 to insure startups the way their investors and customers expect. Vouch has raised more than $225 million from Ribbit Capital, Redpoint, Y Combinator, Index Ventures and others; its newsroom notes a 2022 round of $90 million that valued it at $550 million.
For several years Vouch was a hybrid: broker, MGA and insurer. Insurance Business reports that in 2021 it set up Vouch Insurance Company to take on risk through reinsurance arrangements with State National and United Specialty. Milestones since:
- January 16, 2025: the MGA arm was renamed Corix. Corix sold through outside brokers, and its policies were issued by State National Insurance Company and United Specialty Insurance Company, both rated A by AM Best at the time.
- February 13, 2025: Vouch agreed to acquire the team and book of StartSure Insurance Services, a small-business platform with MGA programs for coworking spaces and inventory, and announced the first close of a Series D led by Allegis Capital.
- August 6, 2025: Hiscox agreed to buy Corix Insurance Services, LLC and Vouch Insurance Company from Vouch, subject to regulatory approvals, with a multi-year distribution agreement between the two. Hiscox completed the Corix purchase on August 11, 2025, for $59.0 million, and Corix's website now describes Corix as having joined Hiscox. Vouch called the sale a way to "sharpen our focus as a broker."
- 2026: Vouch is led by Travis Hedge as CEO, with Hodges as executive chairman, and has built out practices in financial services, health and life sciences, and professional services.
In April 2026 Corgi Insurance Services and Technology Risk Retention Group sued Vouch in federal court in Delaware, alleging trade-secret misappropriation and other claims after a Vouch executive obtained and then canceled a Corgi policy. Vouch filed a motion to dismiss on July 10, 2026, arguing the documents were ones Corgi gives every customer and the case belongs in arbitration. The case was pending at last report.
Business insurance products
As a broker Vouch places the coverages growth companies are asked for: tech E&O, cyber, D&O, employment practices, general liability, workers' compensation, crime, key person, product liability and umbrella for technology companies; E&O, fidelity bonds, D&O, cyber and general partner liability for venture funds, hedge funds and asset managers; and E&O, GL, cyber, EPLI and workers' comp for professional firms. It has promoted specialty programs for AI companies, Web3 and crypto, life sciences and coworking.
It also sells services around the policies: contract requirement reviews, coverage reviews, insurance setup for new companies, investor and fundraising support, workforce compliance help and claims advocacy. For a startup, the contract review is often the useful part: customer MSAs routinely specify tech E&O and cyber limits, and investors expect D&O after a priced round (see D&O insurance for private companies and startups).
Who it insures
Vouch's clients are ambitious early- and growth-stage companies: SaaS, devtools, AI, fintech, crypto, e-commerce, hardware, cybersecurity, digital health and life sciences, venture capital and asset managers, and consulting, accounting, engineering, IT consulting and marketing firms. It says it quotes 81% of submissions the same day. Main-street businesses, contractors and fleets are outside its focus, though the StartSure acquisition added small-business programs.
How to buy
Start the online application at apply.vouch.us. Early-stage companies can often buy core coverage online in minutes; larger accounts get an advisor who markets the account to carriers. Vouch is also embedded in partner platforms, including Carta, and works with Brex, Ramp and Vanta. Because Vouch becomes your broker, renewals, endorsements and certificate requests go through its client portal and support team.
Claims
The insurer named in your policy handles and pays claims. Vouch's role is advocacy: a dedicated advocate guides you from first notice to resolution, works with the carrier on how coverage applies, and keeps you updated, at no cost to clients. Report promptly under the policy's notice provisions; most management liability and tech E&O policies are claims-made, so late notice can cost you the coverage.
Financial strength and ratings
Vouch is a broker and carries no financial strength rating. The ratings that count belong to the insurer on your declarations page, which varies by policy. When Corix launched in January 2025, its policies were issued by State National Insurance Company and United Specialty Insurance Company, both described as rated A by AM Best; Corix business now sits with Hiscox under the 2025 agreement. Check the issuing company on each policy at binding and renewal (see AM Best ratings explained for business buyers). Vouch is private and publishes no financial results. The pending Corgi litigation is a matter between two distributors, not a solvency issue for policyholders.
Strengths and weaknesses
Vouch is a specialist broker for venture-backed and growth companies, strong on management liability and tech E&O, with an online front end and human advisors. Its recent restructuring means it is now a pure broker, so the old pitch of Vouch-built policies now belongs to Corix and Hiscox.
- Strengths: Deep focus on startups, tech, life sciences and fund managers; access to more than 80 carriers plus a distribution deal with Hiscox; contract and fundraising reviews and free claims advocacy; online quoting and partner integrations with Carta and fintech platforms.
- Weaknesses: A broker, so claims and policy security depend on the insurer chosen; performance-based compensation from carriers; card and ACH fees may be passed through; ownership of its former MGA and insurer moved to Hiscox in 2025, and a trade-secret lawsuit from Corgi was pending in 2026.
