Overview

Insureon is an insurance agency, not an insurer. It runs an online application that sends one set of answers to several insurance companies and shows you the quotes that come back, and it employs licensed agents who advise on the choice and manage the account afterward. Its FAQ describes it as both an agent and a broker: its agents place standard small business policies with partner carriers, and its brokers look for specialized coverage when the standard markets will not take a risk. The policy itself is issued, and claims are paid, by the carrier named on your declarations page.

Since 2022 Insureon has belonged to HUB International, the Chicago-based brokerage that Insureon calls the fifth-largest insurance broker in the world. The legal entity is Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions (California license 0L09546), a HUB holding company for specialty and underwriting businesses; Insureon is a division of it.

Insureon says it has access to more than 100 insurance companies. The carriers it features are The Hartford, Chubb, Hiscox, Liberty Mutual, Travelers, Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY), AmTrust, Acuity, The Hanover and Nationwide. In August 2026 it added LIO Insurance, an AM Best A- rated specialty carrier, starting with special event coverage.

Insureon's compensation disclosure spells out how it is paid. The insurer pays a commission, normally a percentage of premium, which is included in the price you pay. It also earns contingent commissions or guaranteed supplemental commissions from most insurers based on growth, retention and loss results across its book; may charge a disclosed technology service fee in states that permit it; and may be paid by insurers for de-identified market data, marketing and training, and interest on premiums it holds. how commercial insurance brokers get paid explains these arrangements.

It is licensed in all 50 states and insures only businesses based in the United States.

History

Insureon grew out of TechInsurance, an agency founded in 1997 to sell insurance online to small technology companies. In 2011 TechInsurance launched Insureon as a broader online storefront for small businesses in more than 900 industries, and both sites still operate. In 2014 Insureon bought Insurance Noodle, a digital wholesale brokerage owned by Willis Group Holdings, which brought access to markets beyond standard carriers. By 2015 it had insured more than 175,000 small businesses. Dan Kazan became CEO in 2019. Insurance Journal's agency rankings showed Insureon's property/casualty revenue at nearly $27 million in 2020, by Insureon's account.

On March 1, 2022, HUB International and Bold Penguin, an Ohio-based small commercial quoting platform, announced they would split Insureon between them. HUB bought the digital agency and the Insureon brand and placed them in its Specialty Program Group; Bold Penguin bought the technology platform and the enterprise software business, and licensed the platform back to HUB. Terms were not disclosed. At the time Insureon said it served more than 400,000 customers a year in all 50 states. Jeff Kroeger, then chief commercial officer and a former Hartford executive, moved with the agency to HUB and became president in 2023. In 2024, as Aon wound down its CoverWallet for Agents platform, Insureon bought a book of CoverWallet small business policies, written with carriers including Liberty Mutual, Hiscox and The Hartford, and took over servicing it, according to Coverager.

Insureon now reports more than 1.8 million policies delivered to more than 450,000 small businesses and more than $3 billion of premium written across Insureon and TechInsurance.

Business insurance products

The online application quotes the core small business lines:

  • General liability and the business owner's policy, which packages liability with property and business income (see What is a business owner's policy (BOP)?).
  • Workers' compensation, priced by payroll and class code.
  • Professional liability / errors and omissions, the line Insureon built its tech niche on; see errors and omissions.
  • Cyber insurance, including a partnership with Coalition.
  • Commercial auto, integrated into the online application with real-time quotes from several carriers, from a single private passenger vehicle to fleets.

Agents can also place commercial property, commercial umbrella, directors and officers, employment practices liability, inland marine, commercial crime and surety bonds. Because it has a wholesale history and HUB behind it, Insureon can reach some surplus lines markets for harder risks, though most of what it sells is admitted, standard small business coverage.

Who it insures

Technology is Insureon's oldest niche: IT consultants, software developers and other tech firms who need E&O and cyber to satisfy client contracts. Beyond that it lists construction and contractors, consulting, cleaning, finance and accounting, food and beverage, healthcare, landscaping, media professionals, personal care, real estate, retail, sports and fitness, and pet businesses. Its most-requested professions include general contractors, carpenters, painters, IT consultants, software developers, house cleaners, lawn care, Restaurant insurance, engineers and personal trainers. It also writes for franchises, freelancers, home businesses, LLCs, S corporations, sole proprietors and startups.

Which carriers quote depends on your state, class and loss history. A business based outside the United States cannot buy through Insureon.

How to buy

You start with the online application. Insureon returns quotes from the carriers whose appetite fits, a licensed agent follows up by phone or email if needed, and once you choose a policy you pay online and download a certificate of insurance, often within a few hours and usually within 24 hours of applying. Agents can help set limits, add endorsements such as an additional insured, or look for specialty markets.

After the sale an account manager handles changes, cancellations and renewals; Insureon says its account managers re-market policies at renewal when price or coverage shifts. Premium is paid to the carrier, not to Insureon, either annually or in installments depending on the carrier. Cancelling requires contacting your account manager.

Agents are available at 800-688-1984 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central time, Monday to Friday.

Claims

Insureon does not adjust or pay claims. Its claims page tells policyholders to report to the insurer, using the contact details in the policy documents or the carrier's website, and to call Insureon's agents for help. Report promptly, document everything and keep copies of every communication; for an E&O or cyber claim, notice timing under a claims-made policy can decide whether coverage applies. Claims service, nurse triage and adjuster quality are those of the issuing carrier.

Financial strength and ratings

Agencies have no AM Best, S&P, Moody's or Fitch financial strength rating, and Insureon has none. Check the rating of the specific insurer on each quote; its featured carriers include A+ and A++ rated national companies, but a panel of more than 100 insurers spans a range (see AM Best ratings explained for business buyers). J.D. Power's small commercial study ranks insurers, not agencies.

Insureon's owner, HUB International, is privately held and does not publish Insureon's results. The site reports an A+ Better Business Bureau accreditation (2025) and an "Excellent" Trustpilot score, which reflect service, not financial strength.

Strengths and weaknesses

Insureon is one of the oldest online agencies for small business and, with HUB behind it, one of the deepest: more carriers than most digital panels, real account managers, and lines such as commercial auto, D&O and bonds that many online agencies do not offer. The trade-off is that you are buying through a large brokerage with all the usual broker economics, and the coverage you get depends on the carrier you pick.

  • Strengths: Access to more than 100 carriers, including The Hartford, Chubb, Hiscox, Travelers and Liberty Mutual; broad menu including commercial auto, umbrella, D&O, crime and surety bonds; licensed agents and account managers who re-shop renewals; deep tech and professional services niche dating to 1997.
  • Weaknesses: An agency, so ratings, forms and claims vary by issuing carrier; in addition to commissions, it may charge a technology service fee where states permit and earns contingent and supplemental commissions; cancellations and some changes require contacting an account manager; no coverage for businesses based outside the U.S.
