Overview

Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is the commercial insurance arm of Swiss Re, the Zurich reinsurer. When a broker shows a U.S. company a property tower, an excess casualty layer or a captive fronting deal with "Swiss Re" on it, this is the business that issues the policy. The NAIC's SWISS RE GRP ranked No. 49 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $1.89 billion, based on NAIC market share data. That is about 0.39% of the national commercial market. It does not rank in the national top 10 of any commercial line. Its biggest lines are other liability ($553.3 million), fire ($493.1 million), allied lines ($308.2 million) and surety ($184.7 million). The group's $2.99 billion all-lines total also counts business outside the 17 commercial lines, such as the accident and health coverage that includes its employer stop loss book.

U.S. policies are issued by five companies, all domiciled in Missouri and run from a Kansas City administrative office:

  • Swiss Re Corporate Solutions America Insurance Corporation: the flagship. It is admitted in all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico, and since January 1, 2023 it also writes in Canada through a Toronto branch.
  • Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Elite Insurance Corporation and Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Premier Insurance Corporation: admitted carriers in all states and D.C.
  • Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Capacity Insurance Corporation: the excess and surplus lines carrier, eligible in every state other than Missouri, where it is a domestic surplus lines insurer.
  • Westport Insurance Corporation: admitted everywhere, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Pacific and Caribbean territories. It came with Swiss Re's 2006 purchase of GE's insurance business, and its new and renewal business has been moving to the flagship since 2021.

Swiss Re International SE, a Luxembourg company, also writes U.S. risks as an alien surplus lines insurer. The parent, Swiss Re Ltd, is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. Ivan Gonzalez runs Corporate Solutions and Adrian Hall is CEO USA. Everything is sold through brokers.

History

Swiss Re was founded in Zurich in December 1863 by Helvetia Insurance, Credit Suisse, Basler Handelsbank and Schweizerischer Lloyd. It opened a U.S. branch in 1910. In the 1990s it narrowed its focus to reinsurance and sold its holdings in direct insurers. The return to primary commercial insurance came in stages:

  • 2006: On June 12, GE completed the sale of GE Insurance Solutions, including Employers Reinsurance Corporation, to Swiss Re for $7.8 billion in cash and securities plus $1.7 billion of assumed debt. Westport Insurance Corporation and First Specialty Insurance Corporation came with it.
  • 2011: Swiss Re adopted a holding structure that made Corporate Solutions a separate business unit beside Reinsurance and Admin Re.
  • 2020–2023: After a September 2020 group decision to reorganize Corporate Solutions' legal entities, the unit announced on March 9, 2021 that it would move North American Specialty Insurance Company from New Hampshire to Missouri, rename it Swiss Re Corporate Solutions America Insurance Corporation and fold the other U.S. primary carriers into it. Westport's new and renewal business began moving over at the same time. The Canadian branch opened on January 1, 2023.
  • 2025: The unit reorganized into nine market units, the USA being one.
  • 2026: On February 20, Corporate Solutions agreed to buy QBE's Global Trade Credit and Surety business, with about $200 million of annual revenue, and QBE announced the sale's completion in early September 2026. That business sits in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, so U.S. buyers will see little change.

Business insurance products

Property is the core. In 2025 it made up 43% of Corporate Solutions' insurance revenue, ahead of accident and health (18%), professional liability (13%), other specialty (14%), credit and surety (7%) and other liability (5%). The Americas produced 58% of the total.

  • Property and business interruption: high-capacity property programs, including worldwide single-carrier placements, backed by Swiss Re's CatNet natural-catastrophe tool and risk engineers. Energy underwriting covers oil and gas, mining and power. The power and utilities team targets companies with more than $200 million of insured assets.
  • Engineering and construction: project policies from planning through operation. Most underwriters are engineers.
  • Casualty: general and product liability, plus crisis management and product recall, for manufacturers, machinery makers, and food and retail companies. Umbrella and excess claims have their own U.S. team.
  • Professional and financial lines: lawyers' professional liability insurance: coverage and key terms for large U.S. law firms (it insures firms in the Top 100, some for more than 20 years), plus professional liability for architects, construction firms, accountants and insurance agencies.
  • Cyber: excess only. It writes up to $10 million of capacity, attaching at $30 million or more, for companies with at least $1 billion of revenue and a mature security program.
  • Surety and credit: contract surety bonds run from Alpharetta, Georgia, plus trade credit and political risk cover.
  • Employer stop loss: specific and aggregate stop loss for self-funded health plans, written on the flagship company in all 50 states and D.C., plus group programs run with captive managers.
  • Alternative risk transfer: fronting for a captive, with collateral set from an analysis of the captive's own strength. Captive protection, parametric natural-catastrophe and weather covers, and multi-year, multi-line structures round out the offering.
  • International programs: a partner network in more than 150 jurisdictions, run through the PULSE portal.

Who it insures

This is a large-account market. The firm describes its clients as large and mid-sized corporations, and its published thresholds bear that out: $1 billion of revenue for cyber and $200 million of insured assets for power. It sells no business owner's policies or small business packages. Workers' compensation is not among the lines it markets; its casualty unit offers employers' liability only where a program needs it. The admitted carriers cover every state, so geography is rarely the constraint. Size, exposure quality and the quality of the submission are.

How to buy

Through a broker; there is no direct channel. Surplus lines placements on the Capacity company or Swiss Re International SE must go through a licensed surplus lines broker. There is no online quoting. Expect a full submission. For property that means a statement of values, catastrophe modeling data and engineering reports. For professional liability it means underwriting meetings: the law firm team reviews each firm and sets terms individually rather than following other carriers. Multinational buyers get local policies through the international program network, and the broker and risk manager can track issuance in PULSE.

Older policies may still name Westport, depending on when they were written. Check the declarations page for the issuing company before you file a claim or answer an audit.

Claims

U.S. claims are reported by email to the team for each line. General U.S. claims questions go to 816-235-3702. North American property losses outside business hours go to 800-935-3718 or to an after-hours mailbox run by the adjusting firm Engle Martin. Swiss Re also keeps a 24/7 global help line in Ireland (+353 1 261 1545) for international business.

The company's published claims commitment promises:

  • first contact within two business days, and a single dedicated claims professional for each claim;
  • interim or advance payments to keep the business running;
  • settlement payments generally within five business days after a claim is agreed;
  • working through coverage questions with you and your broker before it declines a claim or sends a reservation of rights letter.

International program clients can follow claims in PULSE.

Financial strength and ratings

Swiss Re's ratings page (October 2026) lists the group at A+ (Superior) from AM Best with a stable outlook, last reviewed September 17, 2026. S&P rates it AA- (Very Strong), stable, last reviewed November 7, 2025. Moody's rates it Aa3, stable, last reviewed November 10, 2025. At the entity level, Westport carries AA- from S&P, Aa3 from Moody's and A+ from AM Best. The America, Elite and Capacity companies carry AA- and A+, and Premier carries AM Best's A+. AM Best's October 2025 affirmation named Westport and Swiss Re Corporate Solutions America among the affiliates rated A+ with "aa" issuer credit ratings. See AM Best ratings explained for business buyers for what those grades mean.

Corporate Solutions earned $988 million in 2025, up from $829 million in 2024, with a combined ratio of 86.5% against 89.7%. Insurance revenue fell to $7.7 billion from $8.1 billion after the planned non-renewal of an Irish medical expense (Medex) account, partly offset by growth in targeted lines. Large natural catastrophe losses of $148 million came mainly from the Los Angeles wildfires. In the first half of 2026 it earned $490 million at an 86.1% combined ratio while, in its own words, managing downward price pressure in some lines. The reinsurance arm, a separate unit, finished repositioning its U.S. casualty book in 2025 after reserving actions hurt 2024.

Policies on the Capacity company or Swiss Re International SE are surplus lines and generally sit outside state guaranty fund protection.

Strengths and weaknesses

Corporate Solutions offers AA-level capacity, engineering-led property underwriting and alternative risk structures. The trade-off is access: it is a broker-only, large-account market with high entry thresholds.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best (reviewed September 2026), AA- from S&P and Aa3 from Moody's. Large single-carrier property and energy capacity with in-house risk engineering. Captive fronting, parametric and multi-year structures under one roof. Published claims standards, including settlement payments generally within five business days of agreement.
  • Weaknesses: Nothing for small businesses, and workers' compensation is not among the lines it markets. High minimums in some lines, such as cyber limited to excess layers attaching at $30 million or more for companies with $1 billion of revenue. U.S. entities were restructured in 2021, so older Westport policies and newer flagship policies can coexist on one account. Surplus lines placements lack guaranty fund backing.
