Overview
Sentry Insurance is a Stevens Point, Wisconsin, mutual that began as a hardware dealers' fire insurer in 1904. Today it is mainly a business insurer, with a large nonstandard personal auto operation alongside. Its NAIC group ranked No. 43 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $2.21 billion, based on NAIC market share data. Commercial auto was the largest line at $983.2 million, followed by workers' compensation at $470.1 million, other liability at $233.6 million and allied lines at $179.8 million. Sentry does not rank in the national top 10 in any single commercial line. Commercial lines were about 42% of the group's $5.30 billion of 2025 direct premium. Most of the rest is nonstandard auto, motorcycle and off-road insurance sold under The General and Dairyland brands.
The group's companies include Sentry Insurance Company, Sentry Casualty, Sentry Select, Middlesex Insurance and Sentry Lloyds of Texas. Florists' Mutual (Hortica) covers horticulture, and Point Specialty and Point Excess and Surplus are the paper for program business. The General, Permanent General and the Dairyland companies write personal auto, motorcycle and off-road insurance. Sentry Life sells life insurance and retirement plans. Sentry Mutual Holding Company has been the parent since 2021, and Pete McPartland is chairman and CEO.
Sentry sells business insurance several ways. Its own "direct writers" handle core industries such as manufacturing and dealerships. National Accounts works with brokers, trucking goes through a small set of specialist agencies, the Regional unit uses appointed independent agents, and Specialty works through program managers.
History
Members of the Wisconsin Retail Hardware Association formed Hardware Dealers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin in Berlin, Wisconsin, in 1904. It moved to Stevens Point in 1912 and started a separate workers' comp mutual in 1914. It began writing auto in 1916 and was licensed in all 48 states by 1932. Sentry Life followed in 1958, and the Sentry name and minuteman logo arrived in 1962. Sentry bought Dairyland in 1966. The two Hardware Mutual companies merged in 1970 and became Sentry Insurance a Mutual Company in 1971.
Later milestones:
- 1992: AM Best rates Sentry A+ (Superior), a rating it has kept every year since.
- 1999: Bought John Deere Insurance Group. Sentry's dealer programs are endorsed by John Deere and Harley-Davidson.
- 2010–2013: Pete McPartland joins as president and COO and becomes chairman. He shifted the company's focus toward business insurance and added select independent agents.
- 2014–2025: Built out the Regional independent-agent unit with offices across the country; the Cincinnati office, opened in 2025, completed an 11-year buildout.
- 2015: Affiliated with Florists' Mutual Insurance Company (Hortica).
- 2021: Converted to a mutual holding company structure on January 1. Sentry Insurance a Mutual Company became Sentry Insurance Company under the new Sentry Mutual Holding Company.
- 2022: Hired Heather Schenker to lead its E&S and specialty lines division.
- 2024–2025: Bought The General from American Family Insurance for about $1.1 billion in cash ($1.7 billion including assumed liabilities and required capital), its largest deal ever. It was announced September 12, 2024, and closed at year-end. Dairyland's nonstandard auto business is being folded into The General brand.
Business insurance products
Sentry's core commercial lines are workers' compensation, commercial auto, general liability (including product liability, recall and E&O), commercial property and business income, business owner's policies, builders' risk, umbrella and cyber. Sentry Life adds business life insurance and 401(k) plans for owners and employees.
Trucking. Auto liability, physical damage, motor truck cargo and non-trucking liability for owner-operators through large fleets, written only through about 65 appointed trucking-specialist agencies. Sentry insures more than 50,000 truck drivers. Its directors of safety average more than 20 years in the industry, and claims are handled in-house by trucking adjusters. Fleets can earn up to a 5% discount at binding by sharing telematics data through TruckerCloud; see telematics and dashcams in commercial auto insurance. Sentry is an allied member of the American Trucking Associations. See trucking insurance: the coverages motor carriers need.
Dealerships. Property, liability, auto, comp and retirement plans for auto, farm equipment, boat, motorcycle and industrial equipment dealers, a market Sentry has insured since 1969. See Auto dealer insurance.
National Accounts. Large-employer casualty programs placed through brokers. Sentry reported more than 500 accounts in force, over $100 billion of payroll insured and 92% average retention over 10 years in its 2025 report.
Hortica and Specialty. Hortica insures greenhouse growers, nurseries, garden centers, florists, floral wholesalers, sod farms and lawn care firms. Specialty writes niche, high-limit or hard-to-place risks through program managers on Point's admitted and excess and surplus lines paper; see program business: niche insurance through program administrators.
Who it insures
Sentry says it writes only in industries it knows. Its direct writers focus on metalworking, manufacturing, plastics, printing, distribution and food processing, the descendants of the original hardware trade, plus dealerships. The Regional unit targets mid-size businesses paying $50,000 to $1 million in annual premium in commercial construction, commercial real estate, manufacturing, retail and wholesale trade, services and golf courses. Trucking covers long-haul fleets of all sizes. National Accounts serves employers with thousands of workers and many locations. Businesses outside these industries will find a narrower appetite.
How to buy
Start with the "Find an agent" search on sentry.com, which routes you by industry to a Sentry direct writer, an appointed independent agent or a trucking specialist. Large businesses can contact a Sentry territory executive, and brokers place National Accounts business. You can also call 800-473-6879 or use the contact form. The website has no online quote for business policies. Customers use an online account for claims, policy management and certificates of insurance; agency-represented customers get certificates from their agent.
Claims
Report a claim through the customer portal or by phone at 800-473-6879. Non-customers involved in an incident with a Sentry insured can report online as a guest. Sentry handles claims in-house and tries to keep one claims associate on a case from start to finish, moving it to a specialist if severity grows. Workers' comp claims are supported by a medical provider and pharmacy network and state-specific managed care resources, and a Special Investigation Unit pursues suspected fraud.
Financial strength and ratings
Sentry announced on August 5, 2026, that AM Best had affirmed its A+ (Superior) financial strength rating for the 35th consecutive year. AM Best cited Sentry's capital and balance sheet strength, its well-diversified business profile and sustainable results. Sentry's 2025 report shows total premium of $6.2 billion, boosted by The General, record pretax income of $633 million and policyholders' surplus of $8.7 billion. The same letter calls rising commercial auto bodily injury costs Sentry's most significant challenge. It says Sentry has taken a more conservative pricing posture in commercial auto and that its reserve adequacy "has never been stronger." Sentry ranked No. 529 on the 2026 Fortune 1000.
Strengths and weaknesses
Sentry is a top-rated mutual with deep, industry-focused teams for manufacturers, dealers and truckers. It sells the way each market buys, from salaried direct writers to trucking-only agencies and brokers. Its commercial book leans heavily on commercial auto, the line its own CEO calls its biggest challenge given nuclear verdicts and legal system abuse. The General acquisition also makes personal auto a bigger share of the group.
- Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best every year since 1992; $8.7 billion of surplus at year-end 2025; dedicated trucking safety and claims staff and a telematics discount; John Deere and Harley-Davidson dealer endorsements; National Accounts retention of 92% over 10 years.
- Weaknesses: Commercial auto is about 44% of commercial premium, and Sentry cites rising bodily injury costs (see why commercial auto insurance keeps getting more expensive); appetite is limited to chosen industries; no online quoting for business owners; trucking coverage only through about 65 specialist agencies.
Dealers and manufacturers often compare Sentry with Federated Insurance, Zurich North America and Travelers; fleets compare it with Old Republic and Great American.
