Overview
CoverWallet is an insurance agency brand, not an insurer, and in 2026 it is little more than a doorway into Aon. It began in New York in 2015 as one of the first online marketplaces for small business insurance, was bought by Aon, the global broker, in a deal announced in November 2019 and completed in January 2020, and has since been folded into Aon's U.S. affinity business. Aon still owns it. We found no record of Aon selling CoverWallet; the transactions since 2020 have gone the other way, with Aon shutting CoverWallet's agent platform in 2024 and moving its website onto Aon Affinity.
Typing coverwallet.com today lands you on an Aon Affinity page titled "Insurance for Your Business | Aon | Coverwallet | NFP" (NFP is the U.S. broker Aon bought in 2024). The page offers quote requests for general liability, workers' compensation, a business owner's policy, commercial property, professional liability, commercial auto and umbrella, and a personal advisor at 646-844-9933. The licensed entity named in its disclosures is Affinity Insurance Services, Inc., the company behind the Aon Affinity brand, which describes itself as a licensed producer in all states (Texas license 13695), operating as AIS Affinity Insurance Agency in California, Minnesota and New York.
As an agency, CoverWallet does not issue policies or pay claims. The insurer named on your declarations page does. At its 2019 sale CoverWallet listed partnerships with Chubb, CNA, Starr, AIG, Zurich, Hiscox and Liberty Mutual, among others; Aon Affinity does not publish a current panel on the CoverWallet pages. The agency is paid the standard way, by commission from the insurer built into the premium, and Aon, like other large brokers, also earns contingent and supplemental compensation from insurers. Ask for the agency's compensation disclosure if it matters to you; how commercial insurance brokers get paid explains the mechanics.
History
Inaki Berenguer and Rashmi Melgiri, both technology entrepreneurs, founded CoverWallet in New York in 2015. The idea was to let a small business owner answer one set of questions, compare quotes from several carriers, buy online and manage every policy, certificate and payment in one dashboard. It targeted businesses with under $5 million in revenue and raised more than $60 million, according to Coverager, with insurers Zurich and Starr among its investors. By 2019 it had more than 300 employees in New York City, Rochester, New York, and Spain.
Aon and CoverWallet ran a commercial partnership in 2019, piloted in Australia and then expanded to the United States. In November 2019 Aon agreed to buy the company; trade press put the price at about $250 million. The deal closed in January 2020, and the business joined Aon's New Ventures Group as "CoverWallet, an Aon company," with Berenguer as CEO. Aon's then CEO Greg Case said it would combine Aon's data, analytics and distribution with CoverWallet's digital client experience. Berenguer left about two years after the acquisition, The Insurer reported.
The retreat came in stages:
- October 2022: CoverWallet for Agents, a platform through which independent agents placed small business risks via CoverWallet, stopped accepting new business submissions and new agencies, pending a promised redesign.
- August 2024: Coverager reported that CoverWallet had emailed agency partners that it was exiting the wholesale market. From October 1, 2024, the agent platform stopped accepting renewals, and agents had to move their clients elsewhere. Insureon bought a book of CoverWallet business, with policies written by Liberty Mutual, Hiscox and The Hartford among others, and took over servicing it.
- February 2026: Coverager reported that coverwallet.com now redirects to Aon Affinity, where small business insurance is offered through a request form rather than a self-service purchase.
Aon itself has kept growing by acquisition, closing its purchase of the broker NFP in 2024, whose name now appears on the CoverWallet page. How small business digital distribution fits into the larger Aon is not something Aon has spelled out for the CoverWallet brand.
Business insurance products
The quote request page lists general liability, workers' compensation, the BOP (see What is a business owner's policy (BOP)?), commercial property, professional liability, commercial auto, umbrella and an "other" option. Aon Affinity also runs long-standing professional programs under its own brands: Healthcare Providers Service Organization (HPSO) for healthcare practitioners, including physical therapists, Attorneys Advantage for law firms, Dentist's Advantage for dental practices and Affinity Nonprofits. The coverwallet.com landing page routes law firms, dental firms, healthcare firms, accounting firms and Nonprofit insurance to dedicated paths, so those are where the operation is most specialized.
There is no published list of which insurer writes which line. Expect the agent to place the account with one of Aon's carrier markets and to name the insurer on the quote.
Who it insures
CoverWallet was built for small businesses across many classes, and its original appetite was broad: contractors, restaurants, retailers, consultants and other main-street firms. Under Aon Affinity, the emphasis has shifted toward professional and affinity groups, notably law, dental, accounting and healthcare practices and nonprofits, with a general "other businesses" route for everyone else. Aon has not published state restrictions; the producer licenses cover all states.
Independent agents can no longer use CoverWallet to place business. That channel closed to new submissions in October 2022 and to renewals on October 1, 2024.
How to buy
Start at coverwallet.com, choose your business type or the coverage you want and submit the request form. A licensed advisor follows up; you can also call 646-844-9933. Existing customers have a separate "existing policy" path on the same page. This is a request-and-call process now, not the instant online quote-and-bind experience CoverWallet was known for, so allow time for a conversation before you get a price.
Ask the advisor which insurer will issue the policy, its AM Best rating, and how you will get a certificate of insurance and add an additional insured mid-term. If you bought through CoverWallet for Agents before 2024, your policy may now be serviced by Insureon or by your own agent.
Claims
CoverWallet does not handle claims. Report to the insurer named in your policy, using the claim number or portal in your policy documents, and let your Aon Affinity advisor know. Claim service is the carrier's, so the issuing company's own claims process is the one that matters.
Financial strength and ratings
Agencies carry no AM Best, S&P, Moody's or Fitch financial strength rating, and neither CoverWallet nor Aon Affinity has one. The rating to check is the issuing insurer's (see AM Best ratings explained for business buyers). CoverWallet is not ranked in J.D. Power's U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study, which covers insurers.
Its owner, Aon plc, is one of the world's largest insurance brokers and a public company (NYSE: AON). Aon does not report CoverWallet's results separately, and since 2024 its public statements about the brand have been limited to the agent-platform wind-down.
Strengths and weaknesses
CoverWallet's appeal used to be speed: compare and buy online in minutes. That is gone. What remains is access to Aon's markets and Aon Affinity's established professional programs through a personal advisor, which can suit a law, dental or accounting practice, but which is not what the brand promised a contractor or shop owner who wants to buy tonight.
- Strengths: Owned by Aon, one of the largest global brokers; Aon Affinity is a licensed producer in all states; dedicated routes for law, dental, accounting and healthcare firms and nonprofits, backed by long-running Aon Affinity programs; a personal advisor rather than a pure self-service flow.
- Weaknesses: No instant online purchase since the site moved to Aon Affinity; no published carrier panel, prices or service hours on the CoverWallet pages; the agent platform closed (no renewals after October 1, 2024); the brand's future inside Aon is unclear, and Aon has not explained it publicly.
