Overview

Allianz Commercial is the commercial and specialty insurance arm of Allianz SE, the Munich-based insurance group. In the United States it writes through Allianz Global Risks US Insurance Company, Allianz Underwriters Insurance Company and AGCS Marine Insurance Company, along with the old Fireman's Fund companies (Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, American Automobile Insurance Company, Chicago Insurance Company, Interstate Fire & Casualty Company and National Surety Corporation), which Allianz says are now integrated into Allianz Commercial.

Allianz's U.S. group ranked No. 21 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $6.61 billion, based on NAIC market share data. It ranks third nationally in inland marine, sixth in products liability, seventh in aircraft and ninth in fire. The NAIC group is wider than Allianz Commercial alone: it also holds Euler Hermes North America Insurance Company, the U.S. insurer of sister company Allianz Trade (trade credit and surety), and Jefferson Insurance Company, which underwrites some Allianz Travel plans sold to consumers. Read the premium figure with that in mind.

Allianz Commercial sells only through brokers and, since 2024, concentrates its U.S. effort on large corporate and specialty accounts. Allianz reports that Allianz Commercial wrote about €17.3 billion of gross premium worldwide in 2025. Shanil Williams is President, Commercial, Americas.

History

The two strands meet in this profile. Fireman's Fund was founded in San Francisco in 1863 by William Holdredge, a retired sea captain, to insure homes and businesses in Gold Rush-era San Francisco; the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed its office and many of the properties it insured. American Express bought it in 1968, it went public again in 1985, and Allianz bought it in 1991 for more than $3 billion in cash.

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS), the large-risk unit, traces its legal roots to a marine insurer founded in Hamburg in 1885 and was formed in 2006 by merging Allianz Global Risks with Allianz Marine & Aviation. Fireman's Fund's marine units joined AGCS in 2008. In September 2014 Allianz said Fireman's Fund's commercial business would move into AGCS from January 1, 2015, and it sold the high-net-worth personal lines book to ACE (now Chubb) for $365 million, a deal that closed on April 1, 2015. That ended Fireman's Fund as a consumer brand.

In March 2023 Allianz introduced the Allianz Commercial name, combining AGCS with the commercial business of its national property-casualty companies. The biggest U.S. change came next: on April 5, 2024, AGCS agreed to sell its U.S. MidCorp and Entertainment businesses, written through the Fireman's Fund companies, to Arch Insurance Insurance North America for $450 million in cash, with Arch taking on about $2 billion of loss reserves and about 500 employees. Those businesses wrote $1.7 billion of gross premium in 2023. The sale closed on August 1, 2024, and Allianz's site now states that it no longer offers entertainment insurance in the United States.

On May 6, 2026, Allianz announced that it will move its standalone commercial cyber business to Coalition, which becomes its exclusive global cyber partner for at least 10 years. The U.S. is in the first phase. The deal is subject to regulatory and other approvals, and Allianz takes a larger equity stake in Coalition.

Business insurance products

Allianz Commercial's U.S. product range is built for large and complex risks:

  • Property: large property programs, including the capacity behind the group's top-10 national positions in fire and inland marine.
  • Liability: primary and excess liability casualty, including products liability, where the group ranks sixth nationally.
  • Construction: project and contractor coverages, including builders risk, through a construction hub for the Americas.
  • Marine: cargo, hull and marine liability. See ocean marine and cargo insurance: how shipment and vessel coverage works.
  • Aviation: airline, aerospace and general aviation coverage, where the group ranks seventh in the U.S. See aviation insurance for business aircraft owners and operators.
  • Financial lines: D&O, professional liability and related management liability.
  • Cyber: offered by AGCS in partnership with Coalition, with the standalone book moving to Coalition under the 2026 agreement.
  • Natural resources: energy and resource-sector risks through a natural resources hub for the Americas.
  • Alternative risk transfer and captives: structured programs, captive fronting and captive solutions, and multinational program coordination.

Allianz Risk Consulting supports these lines with engineering and loss-control work. Workers' compensation appears in Allianz's U.S. claims material (California and New York procedures), generally as part of larger casualty programs.

Who it insures

The target market is large corporations, multinationals and specialty risks. Allianz's U.S. page describes plans for mid-sized to large enterprises and specialist risks, but after selling the MidCorp book to Arch in 2024 the company itself said its U.S. focus is large corporate and specialty business. Construction, natural resources, aviation and marine have dedicated U.S. or Americas leaders.

Small businesses are not the market. There is no small-business package policy, no online quoting and no direct sale. A U.S. company with overseas operations can use Allianz's multinational network, which the company says reaches more than 200 countries and territories through its own offices and partners.

How to buy

Allianz Commercial sells through national and regional brokers and tells U.S. businesses to contact their broker. Large accounts typically come through the global brokers. Expect a full underwriting submission (statement of values, loss runs, contract and safety detail) and a negotiated, often layered program. Certificates, endorsements and policy service run through the broker.

If you held a Fireman's Fund mid-market or entertainment policy before 2024, the business has since moved to Arch; check your current declarations page for the issuing company, and see when your insurer is sold or merges: what happens to your policy for what a portfolio sale means for a policyholder.

Claims

Report a new U.S. claim by phone at 800-558-1606, which Allianz says is staffed 24 hours a day, or by email to [email protected], ideally on Allianz's loss templates for property, general liability, marine, auto or workers' compensation. Allianz asks you to confirm which legal entity issued your policy, because reporting routes differ by company. Callers outside the U.S. use 314-513-1353. For a claim already reported, call 800-870-8857. Mail goes to the FNOL Claims Unit in O'Fallon, Missouri, and the fax is 888-323-6450.

Workers' compensation claims have their own support: a California medical provider network, a New York direct-deposit form for benefit payments and electronic billing through Jopari Solutions. Loss run requests go to [email protected], and suspected fraud can be reported to the special investigations unit at 800-317-8781.

Financial strength and ratings

Allianz Commercial's financials page lists Allianz Global Risks US Insurance Company, its underwriting affiliate and AGCS Marine Insurance Company at A+ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed in March 2026, and AA (Very Strong) from S&P Global, affirmed in June 2026, both with stable outlooks. Fireman's Fund carries the same A+ from AM Best (March 2026) and AA from S&P (July 2026). Allianz Commercial is not ranked in J.D. Power's U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study, which is consistent with its large-account focus.

Fireman's Fund has one notable regulatory matter on record: in March 2015 it agreed to pay $44 million to settle U.S. Department of Justice False Claims Act charges over crop policies, issued from six offices between 1999 and 2002, that did not qualify for the federal crop insurance program. The settlement involved no finding of liability.

Strengths and weaknesses

Allianz Commercial offers large-account capacity backed by one of the world's largest insurance groups, with strong ratings and global reach. Its U.S. business has been narrowed twice in a decade, first by the 2015 personal-lines sale and then by the 2024 MidCorp sale, so the market for a mid-sized U.S. company is smaller than the Allianz name suggests.

  • Strengths: AA from S&P and A+ from AM Best on the U.S. companies (2026); national top-three position in inland marine and top-10 positions in products liability, aircraft and fire; multinational program network, captive and alternative risk transfer capability; a 24-hour U.S. claims line.
  • Weaknesses: No small-business or online offering; U.S. mid-market and entertainment books sold to Arch in 2024; standalone cyber moving to Coalition under a 2026 deal still being rolled out; legacy Fireman's Fund entity names can complicate certificate checks.

Brokers usually compare Allianz with AXA XL, AIG, Chubb and Zurich North America on large property, casualty and specialty placements.
