Overview

Vantage is a Bermuda specialty insurer and reinsurer launched in 2020, with a U.S. insurance arm that writes casualty, construction, healthcare, property and professional lines for middle-market and large accounts, mostly through wholesale brokers. The NAIC's VANTAGE RISK HOLDINGS GRP ranked No. 87 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $822.5 million, based on NAIC market share data, about 0.17% of the national commercial market. It is not among the 10 largest writers of any single commercial line nationally. Its biggest U.S. lines were other liability ($522.5 million, mostly general and excess liability), package policies (commercial multiple peril, $143.6 million), medical professional liability ($68.2 million) and fire ($55.2 million).

The group's structure:

  • Vantage Risk Ltd.: a Bermuda Class 4 insurer, the reinsurance and Bermuda insurance arm.
  • Vantage Risk Specialty Insurance Company: a Delaware excess and surplus lines insurer that writes surplus lines business in all 50 states.
  • Vantage Risk Assurance Company: a Delaware admitted insurer. Vantage offers admitted options in construction excess casualty and financial lines.

All of them sit under Vantage Group Holdings Ltd., which Howard Hughes Holdings bought in June 2026. Greg Hendrick, the founding CEO, spent about 25 years at XL Group and finished there as CEO of AXA XL. Alex Blanco, formerly chief underwriting officer for AXA XL's Specialty Americas, runs the insurance business.

History

  • July 2020: Vantage Risk Ltd. is incorporated in Bermuda. It is licensed as a Class 4 insurer in October and capitalized by its parent in the fourth quarter. The equity backers are Carlyle and Hellman & Friedman, and the company starts with no legacy liabilities.
  • January 1, 2021: Vantage begins writing property and casualty insurance and reinsurance.
  • 2024: It launches U.S. primary casualty in February, U.S. large property in May, and U.S. primary cyber with up to $10 million of capacity in June.
  • 2025: James Gunson joins as chief claims officer.
  • December 17, 2025: Howard Hughes Holdings (NYSE: HHH) agrees to buy 100% of Vantage for about $2.1 billion in cash, roughly 1.5 times year-end 2025 book value. Bill Ackman, the managing member of Pershing Square, is executive chairman of Howard Hughes. The announcement says Vantage will anchor Howard Hughes' transformation into a diversified holding company.
  • June 4, 2026: The deal closes. A $200 million capital contribution is made at closing, according to a Vantage spokesperson quoted in trade press, and Pershing Square takes over management of Vantage Risk Ltd.'s investment portfolio on a fee-free basis.
  • July 2026: Marc Grandisson, former CEO of Arch Capital, becomes executive chairman. David Gansberg, former president of Arch, is named CEO from June 2027, and Hendrick stays on through the transition.

Business insurance products

Vantage's U.S. insurance lineup is built for mid-sized and large accounts, not small businesses:

  • Primary casualty: surplus lines general liability in 50 states, with deductible and self-insured retention options. The target classes are commercial real estate (offices, warehouses, lessor's risk, shopping centers), hospitality (restaurants, taverns, hotels, casinos, banquet halls, with liquor and assault and battery coverage but no monoline liquor), products liability (consumer products, machinery, non-critical auto parts, food and beverage) and construction. Florida, Texas and South Carolina liquor venues are excluded from the hospitality and real estate books.
  • Excess casualty: following form excess liability on a non-admitted basis, written only through wholesale brokers. It serves construction, real estate, hospitality, manufacturing, services, transportation and warehousing, and wholesale and retail trade.
  • Construction: professional and pollution liability for contractors, project owners and design professionals; subcontractor default insurance and a "SubSelect" product for general contractors that don't qualify for an SDI program; and admitted or non-admitted construction excess casualty.
  • Healthcare: primary healthcare professional liability and general liability for inpatient and outpatient facilities, excess liability for hospital systems and large physician groups, and programs for allied health providers.
  • Large property: surplus lines property for middle-market and corporate clients in manufacturing, technology, healthcare, financial institutions, real estate, warehouses and higher education.
  • Financial and professional lines: management liability, financial institutions, primary and excess cyber, miscellaneous professional liability, and political risk and credit. These are issued on admitted or surplus lines paper.

The Bermuda arm adds excess casualty, healthcare, and financial and professional lines for large insureds, plus reinsurance and third-party capital vehicles. Vantage Risk Ltd., the Bermuda company, wrote $660 million of gross insurance and reinsurance premium in 2025, about $309 million of it on U.S. risks.

Who it insures

Middle-market and large businesses. On the construction side, Vantage defines large contractors as general contractors with $100 million or more in revenue and trade contractors with $50 million or more, and middle-market contractors as anything below those thresholds. On the healthcare side, it targets hospital systems, multistate facilities and large physician practices. A 10-employee shop won't find a product here. If you are a growing contractor, hotel group, manufacturer or healthcare organization, your wholesale broker may bring Vantage in for a primary casualty layer or an excess layer. See General contractor insurance, Hotel and motel insurance and Manufacturer insurance.

How to buy

Through a broker only. Primary casualty, excess casualty and large property come through wholesale brokers. Financial lines and cyber are open to both retail and wholesale brokers. Surplus lines placements on Vantage Risk Specialty need a licensed surplus lines broker, and the policy carries surplus lines tax and generally sits outside state guaranty fund protection. See admitted vs non-admitted insurers: what the difference means. Vantage has no online quoting and no policyholder portal. General inquiries go to [email protected].

Claims

Vantage publishes no claims phone line or claims portal. Report a claim to the notice-of-claim address in your policy, and send a copy through your broker. Claims are handled by Vantage's in-house claims team under chief claims officer James Gunson. The U.S. healthcare unit says it runs a dedicated claims center of expertise for its healthcare products. For excess policies, give notice as soon as a loss could reach your layer. Excess policies usually require notice of any occurrence likely to involve them, and late notice is a common source of disputes.

Financial strength and ratings

On June 17, 2026, AM Best affirmed the A- (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a-" issuer credit ratings of Vantage Risk Ltd. and its affiliates, including Vantage Risk Specialty Insurance Company and Vantage Risk Assurance Company. It removed them from under review with developing implications, where they had been since the December 2025 deal announcement, and assigned a positive outlook. AM Best rated the balance sheet very strong, operating performance adequate, the business profile limited and enterprise risk management appropriate. It said in July 2026 that the leadership change did not affect the ratings.

S&P Global Ratings took a different view. On June 19, 2026, it cut the operating companies' ratings to BBB from A-, and the holding company to BB from BBB-, because of the lower credit quality of the new parent, not Vantage's own results. The S&P ratings were then withdrawn at Vantage's request.

Vantage Risk Ltd.'s financial condition report shows a portfolio that had been almost entirely investment-grade bonds. From June 2026, Pershing Square manages it with cash, short-term Treasuries and public equities, and less emphasis on bonds. AM Best said it expects the new owner to put capital into Vantage rather than take dividends out. See AM Best ratings explained for business buyers.

Strengths and weaknesses

Vantage brings experienced AXA XL and Arch leadership, no pre-2021 legacy claims, and capacity for complex middle-market and large risks. Its new ownership is unusual for an insurer, and its rating picture is split.

  • Strengths: It started with a clean balance sheet, writing from 2021. It has deep construction and healthcare specialty units and surplus lines paper in all 50 states. AM Best rates it A- with a positive outlook after the 2026 deal. Marc Grandisson, the former Arch CEO, is now executive chairman.
  • Weaknesses: It doesn't serve small businesses, and access is broker-only, mostly wholesale. It publishes no claims phone or portal. S&P downgraded it to BBB on parent credit quality before the rating was withdrawn, so buyers whose contracts or lenders specify an S&P rating should check how that affects them. A more equity-heavy investment strategy under Pershing Square adds market risk. The CEO handover is planned for June 2027.
