Overview

Ascot Group is a Bermuda-based specialty insurance and reinsurance group with three main platforms: Lloyd's Syndicate 1414 in London, Ascot Bermuda, and Ascot U.S. It is majority-owned by Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments). Its U.S. group was ranked No. 55 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $1.58 billion, based on NAIC market share data. More than half of that, $834.6 million, is other liability (E&S, excess and professional liability). Workers' compensation, commercial package and commercial auto follow, each between about $115 million and $156 million. Ascot does not rank in the national top 10 in any line.

The U.S. group consists of six companies: Ascot Insurance Company, Ascot Specialty Insurance Company and Ascot Surety & Casualty Company, all domiciled in New York, and three Mississippi workers' comp carriers acquired with AmFed: AmFed National, AmFed Casualty and AmFed Advantage. Lloyd's and Bermuda business is not part of the U.S. figures. Group-wide, AM Best put Ascot's 2024 gross written premium at $4.7 billion, and Ascot reported $16 billion of total assets at March 31, 2026.

Ascot sells only through brokers. Jonathan Zaffino is group CEO and president; Marc Amen is CEO, North America; Matt Kramer is CEO of Ascot U.S.

History

Ascot Underwriting Limited was established in 2001 as a Lloyd's managing agency, opened a U.S. office in Houston in 2007 and a Bermuda office in 2014. In 2016 CPP Investments bought the business, a deal reported at $1.1 billion, and created Ascot Group Limited. Ascot Bermuda followed in 2017 and the U.S. specialty insurance platform launched in 2018.

In September 2021 Ascot agreed to buy AmFed National Insurance Company and its affiliates, a Ridgeland, Mississippi, workers' comp carrier and third-party administrator licensed in 15 Southeastern and Midwestern states. That deal became Ascot's U.S. workers' comp division, and in the same year Ascot also acquired a surety company. Ascot says its gross written premium passed $2 billion in 2021 and $3 billion in 2022.

Ownership has been stable despite talk of change. In December 2021, Reuters reported that CPP Investments planned to sell Ascot. No sale followed. In November 2024, BellTower Partners closed a minority investment, and CPP Investments kept a significant majority.

2026 brought reorganization. Ascot launched Ascot Guard, a crisis management and security product, in the U.K. in March 2026, with a U.S. launch planned. On September 10, 2026, it consolidated seven U.S. segments into five product verticals (Marine & Specialty, Casualty, Surety, Financial Lines and Alternative Risk Solutions) under a new regional leadership structure effective October 1. On September 29 it named Mark Pepper president of global underwriting and announced a new consumer lines division, including high-net-worth personal lines.

Business insurance products

Casualty. E&S primary and excess liability for mid-sized accounts, written non-admitted through a limited wholesale panel: general liability up to $2 million per occurrence / $4 million aggregate (minimum premium $15,000) and excess up to $10 million. Excess casualty for national accounts offers up to $20 million of limits above a $5 million attachment, with a $25,000 minimum premium. Shared Risk Casualty is an admitted, retail-channel program for companies with $100 million to $5 billion of revenue. It covers workers' comp, general and products liability, and auto liability on deductibles, self-insured retentions and retrospective plans, with retentions from $50,000 to $2 million. See umbrella vs excess liability for how these layers stack.

Workers' compensation. The former AmFed operation writes comp for mid-sized accounts in targeted industries, with its own policyholder portal and online payroll reporting.

Marine and specialty. Inland marine covers builders risk, installation floaters, contractors equipment, motor truck cargo, warehouse legal liability, rolling stock and broadcast towers, admitted or non-admitted in all states. Minimum premium is $5,000 for most classes (see inland marine insurance for tools, equipment and goods in transit). Ocean marine, ocean cargo and environmental round out the vertical.

Financial lines. AscotPRO covers cyber, technology E&O, healthcare, miscellaneous and media professional liability, plus lawyers' professional liability insurance: coverage and key terms for firms of 5 to 150 lawyers, including firms in tougher practice areas or with prior claims. AscotEXEC writes D&O and management liability for public, private, nonprofit and financial institution clients.

Surety and alternative risk. Commercial and contract surety bonds have program capacity up to $75 million single and $200 million aggregate, and Ascot Surety & Casualty is a U.S. Treasury-listed company (see surety bonds explained: how they differ from insurance). Alternative Risk Solutions covers single-parent, group, agency and association captives, trade credit, and Portfolio Solutions. That last unit provides capacity to MGAs, MGUs and captives.

Who it insures

Ascot is a middle-market and upper-middle-market carrier. Its E&S casualty unit targets construction, manufacturing and distribution, hospitality (including restaurants, bars and hotels) and commercial real estate. It publishes what it avoids: New York construction, habitational real estate, nightclubs, public entities and for-hire trucking. Excess casualty adds construction wraps, retail and service industries. Surety targets construction, clean energy, healthcare, home builders, manufacturing, mining, utilities, technology, transportation and waste services. Group-wide, Ascot lists aviation and space, data centers, energy, food and beverage, financial institutions, marine and professional services among the industries it serves.

The minimum premiums tell you the floor. Accounts paying less than $10,000 to $25,000 for a line are generally below Ascot's appetite, so most small businesses will meet Ascot, if at all, through an MGA program it backs.

How to buy

Through a broker. E&S casualty business comes only through Ascot's limited wholesale network. Lawyers professional liability uses individually approved specialty producers, Shared Risk Casualty is sold through retail brokers, and workers' comp through appointed agents. There is no online quoting for buyers. Expect a full submission with loss runs, exposures and, for loss-sensitive programs, collateral discussions. The September 2026 reorganization gives brokers national relationship managers and regional executives for the Central and West regions, with Northeast and Southeast leaders still being recruited.

Workers' comp policyholders use an insured portal to pay premium, report payroll and request loss runs.

Claims

Report U.S. claims (other than workers' comp) at 833-454-3023 or [email protected]. Workers' comp injuries are reported at 866-866-9199 or [email protected], as listed on Ascot's claims page. Ascot runs in-house U.S. claims teams for marine, specialty casualty and management and professional lines, plus subrogation. Shared Risk Casualty clients can choose bundled or unbundled claims handling through a third-party administrator partner. Lloyd's, Bermuda and Guernsey policies have separate claims addresses, so check which entity issued your policy.

Financial strength and ratings

In October 2025, AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a+" long-term issuer credit ratings of Ascot Bermuda and the six U.S. companies, with stable outlooks. It cited a very strong balance sheet, adequate operating performance and rating lift from CPP Investments, which it views as having superior financial strength. AM Best noted a 2020–2024 weighted average combined ratio of 97.6% for the group, and 90.5% for Syndicate 1414. The U.S. companies are supported by a net worth maintenance agreement. Ascot also cites an A+ (Strong) Fitch rating and an A rating from S&P that applies to Ascot Bermuda Limited, and an AM Best Financial Size Category of XV.

As a private company, Ascot does not publish full financial statements on its website.

Strengths and weaknesses

Ascot is a well-capitalized, broker-only specialty market with deep casualty and professional lines expertise and a patient institutional owner. It is not built for small accounts and is in the middle of reorganizing its U.S. business.

  • Strengths: A (Excellent) from AM Best, A+ from Fitch and backing from CPP Investments. Clear published appetites, limits and minimum premiums, so a broker knows quickly whether an account fits. Broad specialty shelf, including excess casualty, loss-sensitive programs, LPL for higher-risk law firms and a Treasury-listed surety. Admitted and E&S paper for many lines.
  • Weaknesses: Broker-only, with no online quoting or small-business products, and minimum premiums of $10,000 to $25,000 in key casualty lines. Excludes New York construction and habitational risks in E&S casualty. Several regional leadership roles were still being filled as of October 2026. Limited public financial disclosure compared with a listed carrier.
