Overview

MSIG USA is the U.S. commercial insurance business of MS&AD Insurance Group, one of Japan's three big non-life groups. The U.S. group was ranked No. 32 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $3.42 billion, based on NAIC market share data, about 0.71% of the national commercial market. The group has no national top-10 line. Its biggest lines are other liability (general, umbrella and excess), allied lines and fire (property), and commercial auto. Most of its U.S. premium is commercial: $3.42 billion of $4.00 billion across all lines.

MSIG USA is the marketing name for the underwriting companies of MSIG Holdings (U.S.A.), Inc. These include Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company of America, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance USA, MSIG Specialty Insurance USA and a new surplus lines company, MSIG Specialty Insurance America. The NAIC group also includes:

  • MS Transverse, a program and fronting carrier bought in 2023, with MS Transverse Insurance Company, MS Transverse Specialty and TRM Specialty Insurance Company.
  • Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, MS&AD's other Japanese non-life company, which the NAIC lists as a group member.
  • DTRIC Insurance, a Honolulu home and auto insurer that also writes business auto.

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, the direct parent, is owned by MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, listed in Tokyo (8725). Peter McKenna is CEO of MSIG USA. Everything is sold through brokers or program partners.

History

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance traces its roots to the Mitsui and Sumitomo trading houses of the 17th century and gives its legal date of establishment as October 21, 1918. The present company was formed in October 2001 by merging Mitsui Marine & Fire and Sumitomo Marine & Fire. MSIG says it has written ocean and inland marine around the world since 1957. Key U.S. dates:

  • January 2002: the U.S. holding company was set up.
  • April 2010: Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group merged with Aioi Insurance and Nissay Dowa General to form MS&AD.
  • February 2016: bought Amlin plc, now MS Amlin, a London and Lloyd's specialty insurer.
  • June 2021: bought International Transportation and Marine Office (ITMO), a U.S. marine business.
  • January 2023: completed the purchase of Transverse Insurance Group from Virgo Investment Group. Transverse had started as a hybrid fronting carrier in 2018. Terms were not disclosed; the Nikkei reported about $400 million plus up to $150 million in earnouts. It now trades as MS Transverse Insurance Group.
  • 2025–2026: Mitsui Sumitomo agreed on March 28, 2025 to build a 15% stake in W. R. Berkley through open-market purchases, alongside a voting agreement with the Berkley family. It reported in March 2026 that it had reached 15%. The stake is a minority one.

MSIG USA has since added a surety unit and, in 2026, a new surplus lines company to support its E&S business. On July 8, 2026 it named three independent directors to its board.

Business insurance products

Property. Retail property provides admitted coverage for U.S. and multinational clients: commercial real estate, manufacturing and global property programs. Wholesale property writes excess and surplus lines business for catastrophe-exposed, layered and excess placements. MSIG lists "soft" occupancies (real estate, hospitals, schools and universities, hotels and casinos, municipalities, retail) and "hard" ones (heavy manufacturing, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical, technology, automotive and consumer goods). It will write industry-specific or manuscript forms.

Casualty. General liability, umbrella, excess liability, commercial auto (including large fleets) and workers' compensation in all 50 states and D.C. Comp is offered on loss-sensitive and high-deductible plans; see large deductible workers' comp programs: how they work and what they cost. Its comp appetite covers light and heavy manufacturing, trading companies, real estate, technology, distributors, retail and food and beverage processing. Renewable energy projects such as wind, solar, battery storage and charging stations can buy admitted excess liability with limits up to $25 million.

Marine, financial and specialty lines. Ocean and inland marine; D&O, EPL, fiduciary and crime; cyber; political risk and trade credit; and commercial surety (license and permit, customs, transportation, court and fiduciary, public official and self-insurance bonds).

Multinationals. A core niche is foreign-owned companies with U.S. plants, distribution or sales. MSIG writes local U.S. policies that tie into the parent company's global master program and coordinates claims between the master and local policies.

Programs and fronting. MSIG USA's programs unit builds property and casualty programs with partners in all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico. MS Transverse rents its admitted and surplus lines paper to MGAs and program administrators backed by more than 100 reinsurer relationships, and keeps part of the risk itself. If your policy is issued by MS Transverse, the MGA or program administrator typically did the underwriting.

Who it insures

MSIG USA targets mid-size to large accounts, including Fortune 500 companies for general liability, and the U.S. operations of foreign-owned multinationals, including manufacturers, distributors and trading companies. Small businesses are not its market. There is no business owner's policy and no direct sale. A main-street business is more likely to meet the group through an MGA program written on MS Transverse paper than through MSIG USA itself.

How to buy

Through a broker. Admitted lines go through retail brokers, and wholesale property and E&S lines through wholesale brokers. MSIG has about 10 U.S. offices, with underwriting and marketing offices in New York, Warren (New Jersey), Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas and Los Angeles. Expect a full underwriting submission and an in-house risk engineering visit for property and comp. Policyholders can order loss runs: what they are and how to request them and work through premium audits: how they work and how to prepare with the Warren team (800-388-1802).

Claims

Report new U.S. claims to the Claim Reporting Center at 866-676-6872, by fax to 866-329-6766, by email to [email protected], or through the InteractClaims online system (first-time users register). Auto claims can also be started by QR code. MSIG says new claims are set up within three to four hours and an adjuster calls the same or next business day. For an existing claim, call 866-676-6272 (Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET, Friday to 6 p.m.) or email [email protected].

All reported claims go through an intake center in Cincinnati, then to a specialist claims manager by line. The claims staff of more than 150 includes a large workers' comp group with regional comp offices, and a TPA team supervises claims assigned to outside administrators. Interpreters support Japanese, Spanish and other languages. California comp claims use a medical provider network run by CorVel.

Financial strength and ratings

On June 8, 2026, MSIG USA announced that AM Best had affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating and "aa" issuer rating of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company of America, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance USA and MSIG Specialty Insurance USA. AM Best gave the same A+ rating to the new MSIG Specialty Insurance America, and all outlooks are stable. The ratings rest on support from the Japanese parent. S&P assigned MSIG USA an A+ financial strength rating with a stable outlook, announced in July 2024. MS Transverse's site cites an A+ (Superior) AM Best rating.

MSIG USA does not publish separate U.S. results on its site. Its insurers rely on a pooling agreement and the parent's balance sheet.

Strengths and weaknesses

MSIG USA is a well-capitalized, broker-only market for mid-size and large commercial accounts, with a real edge on foreign-owned multinationals. It is not built for small business, and its fronting arm adds a layer some buyers will not expect.

  • Strengths: A+ ratings from AM Best (affirmed June 2026) and S&P, backed by MS&AD. Admitted in every state, D.C. and Puerto Rico, with retail and E&S property under one roof. Multinational program coordination with Japanese-language claims support. In-house risk engineering, loss-sensitive comp plans and policyholder loss-data portals.
  • Weaknesses: No small business products, no direct buying and no online quoting. Policies issued by MS Transverse are underwritten and often serviced by outside MGAs, so service depends on the program. The group is outside the national top 10 in every commercial line. Separate U.S. financial results are not published on its site.
