Overview

GuideOne is a specialist insurer of houses of worship and the nonprofits that work alongside them. It was ranked No. 90 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $743.4 million, based on NAIC market share data, or about 0.15% of the national commercial market. It does not rank in the national top 10 in any single line. Package policies (commercial multiple peril) account for $481.9 million of that, followed by commercial auto, other liability and allied lines, which is the shape you would expect from a book built on church and nonprofit property-liability packages.

The NAIC group has five companies: GuideOne Insurance Company (the lead company), GuideOne America Insurance Company, GuideOne Elite Insurance Company, GuideOne National Insurance Company and GuideOne Specialty Insurance Company. Since April 1, 2021, GuideOne Insurance Company has been a stock insurer owned through an intermediate holding company, GuideOne Insurance Group, Inc., by GuideOne Mutual Holding Company, whose members are the policyholders. Headquarters are in West Des Moines, Iowa, and Ken Cadematori is president and CEO.

The company's operations look unusual for a mutual. Since the end of 2023, most of the staff who underwrite, handle claims and run systems for GuideOne work for The Mutual Group, a separate services company created with a $200 million investment from Bain Capital Insurance. GuideOne itself keeps a small team (finance, underwriting leadership, legal and investments) and the insurance risk. It sells through independent agents and brokers nationwide.

History

William N. Plymat founded the company in Des Moines as Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company. It was licensed in Iowa in 1947 to sell auto insurance to people who did not drink alcohol, on the theory that abstainers had fewer crashes. Its ties to churches grew from there, and church property and liability became a core line. The company was renamed Guidant Mutual in 1998 and GuideOne in 1999.

Key steps since then:

  • 2000–2001: GuideOne cut about 200 jobs and dropped nonstandard auto, motorcycle, boat and mobile home business, as Insurance Journal reported in August 2000. Part of the nonstandard auto book went to GMAC.
  • Later years: GuideOne left standard personal auto and homeowners insurance as well and now writes only commercial business.
  • Mid-2010s onward: the Programs segment was built with outside program administrators. GuideOne says it has run it for "almost a decade."
  • April 1, 2021: GuideOne Mutual Insurance Company reorganized into a mutual holding company structure after Iowa's insurance commissioner approved the plan on March 29, 2021. GuideOne Specialty Mutual converted to a stock company at the same time. Policy terms and premiums were not changed.
  • 2023: after heavy catastrophe losses from 2020 to 2023 and adverse reserve development, AM Best put the ratings under review with negative implications in July 2023.
  • December 29, 2023: Bain Capital Insurance closed a $200 million investment that bought GuideOne's operating platform and launched The Mutual Group, with GuideOne as its first member. Ken Cadematori, previously CFO, became president and CEO, and Bernard Hengesbaugh became board chair.

GuideOne also tried an excess and surplus lines specialty unit in the late 2010s, and trade press reported exits from parts of it, including public company D&O. The 2025 annual report describes only three segments (religious organizations, nonprofit human services and programs), but footnotes that specialty lines business is still placed through licensed surplus lines brokers.

Business insurance products

Religious organizations get a package built for churches. It includes commercial property with tiered endorsements for things like stained glass, musical instruments and ceremonial items, plus general liability. Professional liability options cover licensed counselors, educators, faith community nurses and directors and officers. Other lines are workers' compensation, business auto, cyber, D&O, employment practices liability, equipment breakdown, outdoor signs, religious expression liability, sexual misconduct liability and umbrella.

Nonprofit human services buyers get a similar menu: property, GL, workers' comp, business auto, crime, cyber, D&O, EPL, equipment breakdown, sexual misconduct, special events and umbrella. For boards, the D&O and EPL parts matter most; D&O insurance for nonprofit boards explains how those policies respond.

Programs are niche property and casualty books underwritten by program administrators on GuideOne paper. In 2025 they produced $195 million of gross written premium. GuideOne does not name its administrators publicly, and the 2025 annual report describes exits from underperforming programs. See program business: niche insurance through program administrators for how this kind of arrangement works.

Policyholders also get GuideVantage, a set of discounted vendor services that includes safety training, cooking-fire suppression for group homes and vehicle telematics. Agent materials mention armed intruder training and abuse prevention resources. Sexual misconduct cover is the line to read most carefully. Limits, aggregates and claims-made triggers differ widely between carriers, and abuse and molestation liability coverage covers what to check.

Who it insures

GuideOne said in its 2025 annual report that it serves more than 35,000 religious organization accounts; its product pages cite more than 50,000 policyholders overall. Religious organizations produced $418 million of gross written premium in 2025: Church insurance, synagogues, mosques, temples, interfaith groups, religious schools, clergy and Bible camps.

The nonprofit human services segment wrote $175 million in 2025, with growth in youth and community services. Target classes include:

  • Aging services: senior centers, adult day centers and meal delivery.
  • Behavioral health: outpatient programs, transitional living and residential facilities.
  • Developmental disability services: group living, independent and supportive living, sheltered workshops and vocational programs.
  • Community services: food banks, shelters, thrift stores, cultural institutions and museums.
  • Education and youth: early learning, K-12 Private school insurance and charter schools, after-school programs, Child care center insurance and court-appointed advocacy.

Coverage availability varies by state. GuideOne does not publish minimum or maximum account sizes.

How to buy

GuideOne sells through independent agents and brokers. Its online "start a quote" form collects your details and routes them to an agent or underwriter; there is no instant online quote. You can also call 877-448-4331. If you already work with an agency that places Nonprofit insurance, ask whether it is appointed with GuideOne; agents apply through the company's "become an agent" page. Policyholders manage accounts through an online login, and agents use a separate portal.

When you compare GuideOne with Church Mutual or Brotherhood Mutual, line up the sexual misconduct, D&O and EPL forms side by side rather than comparing package prices. Those sections drive most of the difference in what a church actually gets.

Claims

Report property, liability and commercial auto claims online through the "report a claim" form, by email to [email protected], or by phone at 888-748-4326. Questions on existing claims go to [email protected] or the same number. The claims fax is 800-676-4457, and the claims mailing address is PO Box 14543, Des Moines, IA 50306. Workers' compensation claims start with a downloadable claims kit and the state First Report of Injury form, followed by an online submission. Auto glass has its own claims page.

The 2025 annual report says GuideOne handled 7,872 claims that year and closed more than it opened. Initial payments on first-party property and auto claims typically went out in under 30 days, and most claims were resolved within 100 days. Those are the company's own figures.

Financial strength and ratings

AM Best rates GuideOne Insurance Company and its subsidiaries A- (Excellent) for financial strength, with a negative outlook. It affirmed that rating in March 2025, citing very strong balance sheet strength but marginal operating performance. AM Best's concerns were catastrophe losses in 2020–2023, volatile risk-adjusted capital and continued, though moderating, unfavorable reserve development. It credited the Bain Capital transaction with helping rebuild surplus. AM Best had removed the ratings from under review in February 2024, after the deal closed, and kept the negative outlook. See AM Best rating for what an outlook signals.

GuideOne's own 2025 figures, from its annual report:

  • Combined ratio of 101.3%, against 102.1% in 2024 (see combined ratio).
  • Net income of $23.5 million.
  • Policyholder surplus of $586.5 million at year-end, up 2.6%.
  • Total gross written premium of $790 million, with core (non-program) premium up 16% to $594 million.
  • Renewal retention of 87%.

Strengths and weaknesses

GuideOne has insured churches for more than 60 years, and its forms and risk services reflect that. The capital repair is the other half of the story. A new outside services partner now runs day-to-day operations, the rating outlook is still negative, and underwriting results were only just above breakeven in 2025.

  • Strengths: Long specialization in religious organizations, with more than 35,000 church accounts, and broad human services appetite including behavioral health and developmental disability services. A full specialty menu, including sexual misconduct, religious expression, D&O and EPL. Policyholder ownership through a mutual holding company. Surplus and net income grew in 2025.
  • Weaknesses: AM Best's A- rating carries a negative outlook (as of March 2025), after cat losses and reserve charges. Operations are outsourced to The Mutual Group, a private equity-backed services company, so service quality depends on that relationship. No instant online quoting. Program business is a large share of premium and has seen exits.
