Overview
Amerisure is a Michigan mutual that specializes in mid-sized construction, manufacturing and healthcare businesses, sold through a small, hand-picked network of independent agencies. Its NAIC group ranked No. 78 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $984.2 million, based on NAIC market share data. That is about 0.20% of the national commercial market. It is not among the 10 largest writers of any commercial line nationally. Its book is spread evenly across casualty lines: workers' compensation ($286.0 million), commercial auto ($275.4 million), commercial multiple peril, the package line ($225.3 million) and other liability ($151.1 million). Amerisure writes no personal lines.
The group has three insurers: Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company, Amerisure Insurance Company and Amerisure Partners Insurance Company, all based in Farmington Hills, Michigan. They are licensed in all 50 states and owned by policyholders through a mutual holding company structure adopted in 2009. Gregory J. Crabb, a former Hartford executive who joined Amerisure in 2008, has been president and CEO since 2014.
History
- 1912: On September 12, 11 days after Michigan's workers' compensation law took effect, the Michigan Manufacturers Association and a group of local manufacturers formed Michigan Workmen's Compensation Mutual Insurance Company.
- 1916: The company says it became the first U.S. insurer to run its own hospital, for recovering injured workers.
- 1924–1955: Renamed Michigan Mutual Liability Company, it expanded into Indiana and Ohio in 1924 and later moved into multiple lines.
- 1984: Michigan Mutual became the Amerisure Companies.
- 1997: Amerisure launched its Partners For Success program, which limits distribution to a select group of independent agencies in its target industries.
- 2009: The company converted to a mutual holding company structure.
- 2014: Crabb was elected president and CEO.
- 2026: Compre, a Bermuda legacy reinsurer, announced on March 18 that it would assume a material portfolio of Amerisure's asbestos liabilities and manage the claims. Terms were not disclosed. Amerisure's CFO called it a step to resolve legacy exposure and reduce future volatility. When Amerisure announced its AM Best affirmation on March 30, it said the end of that earnings drag supported the stable outlook.
Business insurance products
Amerisure writes the core casualty and property lines for mid-sized accounts:
- workers' compensation, general liability, commercial auto and umbrella;
- commercial property and inland marine;
- loss-sensitive programs for workers' comp, general liability and auto, written monoline or multiline.
Loss-sensitive plans are a selling point for accounts large enough to share risk:
- large deductible plans on a paid loss, incurred loss or prefunded basis, for accounts with about $500,000 or more of premium, with no letter of credit required on prefunded programs;
- retrospective rating plans on a paid or incurred basis, for accounts with about $350,000 or more of premium. The first retro adjustment uses incurred losses valued 18 months after the policy month and annually after that. Incurred-loss retros need no letter of credit.
Amerisure says its collateral formula is based on expected losses and reserves, rolls forward annually and never stacks, a point a CFO should compare carefully when weighing loss-sensitive offers.
Healthcare accounts can get COMMAND Coverage for Healthcare, a property package with mechanical breakdown, broad computer coverage, utility services, patients' and residents' personal effects and money, and emergency evacuation response.
Amerisure Programs (AMP) is a separate team that writes six industry programs: gas and welding suppliers, security guard and private investigation firms, tow operators, swimming pool contractors, equipment rental companies and condominium associations. It also looks at hard-to-place programs and fronting arrangements.
Surety. A newer Amerisure Surety division writes performance and payment bonds and commercial bonds for contractors through specialist surety agents.
Who it insures
Amerisure's appetite is narrow and deep: mid-sized companies in construction, manufacturing and healthcare, plus wholesale and distribution. In construction it targets General contractor insurance and other contractors with jobsite injury, liability, fleet and equipment exposures. In manufacturing it lists metal, woodworking, electronics and concrete. In healthcare it insures hospitals, clinics, skilled nursing, assisted living and continuing care communities. Very small businesses looking for a business owner's policy are not its market. Licenses in all 50 states make it workable for contractors and manufacturers with multistate operations.
How to buy
Through a Partners For Success independent agency only. Amerisure says it does not offer quotes or coverage online or directly to businesses, and in 2026 it says it is not appointing new agencies. If your current broker is not an Amerisure partner, you will have to use one that is, which can mean changing brokers. Amerisure's agency finder lists its partners.
After binding, policyholders use SureConnect for claims, pay bills online and report payroll online for comp policies. Final premiums on payroll-rated policies are set by an annual premium audit.
Claims
Report a claim online through SureConnect, which takes first notice of loss 24/7 and assigns a claim number on submission. You can also call 800-257-1900 or email [email protected]. Surety bond claims go to [email protected]. New and renewing comp policyholders get state-specific claim kits with forms and notices.
Claims services include medical bill review, major case units for complex claims, a special investigation unit, texting with adjusters, and digital payments to injured workers by push-to-debit, ACH or virtual card where state law allows. Texas comp claims can use a workers' comp health care network Amerisure built with Enlyte. Risk management consultants offer on-site OSHA 10-hour and competent person training, a construction leadership series for supervisors, a "Managing Your Claims" course, and an Observational Safety Program for patient and resident handling in healthcare.
Financial strength and ratings
On March 30, 2026, Amerisure said AM Best had affirmed its Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) with a stable outlook. The company says it has held the A rating for more than 25 years. According to Amerisure, AM Best cited three consecutive years of improvement in Amerisure's core operating ratio and net income, strong surplus growth, and the removal of future earnings drag from legacy asbestos liabilities. Amerisure's 2025 annual report shows more than $55 million of surplus growth in 2025. It has no S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings.
Strengths and weaknesses
Amerisure is a focused mid-market specialist with a long workers' comp heritage, flexible loss-sensitive options and a recently cleaned-up balance sheet. Access is the main constraint: you can buy it only through its selected agencies, and it is not adding new ones.
- Strengths: More than a century of construction and manufacturing comp experience, licensed in all 50 states. Loss-sensitive plans with comparatively low premium thresholds and non-stacking collateral. Six niche programs, including tow operators and security guards, that many standard carriers avoid. Asbestos legacy liabilities transferred to Compre in 2026, and an A (Excellent) AM Best rating affirmed in March 2026.
- Weaknesses: Sold only through a closed network of partner agencies, with no direct or online buying. Not a market for very small businesses or business owner's policies. Rated A rather than A+ or higher. Legacy asbestos liabilities weighed on earnings until the 2026 Compre transfer, whose terms were not disclosed.
