Overview

World Insurance Associates is a private retail broker headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey. Its April 21, 2026 release says it serves clients from more than 230 offices in the United States and the United Kingdom and has more than $700 million in revenue. Insurance Journal's September 2026 article put the office count at more than 250 and ranked World 14th on its Top 100 Independent Property/Casualty Agencies list. The revenue figure is the company's own statement and we did not find an audited number. For comparison, Business Insurance reported in August 2023 that World's brokerage revenue grew by more than 50% in 2022 to $347.2 million, making it 28th on that magazine's ranking at the time.

History

Rich Eknoian established World in 2011, and the company has grown mostly by buying independent agencies, with recent deals in New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, and it now has offices in the United Kingdom as well. Ownership has gone through two private-capital stages:

  • 2020: Charlesbank Capital Partners invested as World's first private equity sponsor.
  • 2023: Goldman Sachs Asset Management funds agreed to invest more than $1 billion in debt and equity, with Charlesbank staying as a co-lead investor and retaining half its stake in the recapitalization. Business Insurance reported on August 21, 2023 that the deal implied an enterprise value of $3.4 billion and was expected to close in the fourth quarter.

On April 21, 2026, World named John Newell chief executive officer and moved Eknoian to executive chairman after what the company called a multi-year succession plan. Newell had been chief commercial officer at Newfront and earlier led Marsh's Central U.S. region.

Services

World sells commercial property and casualty insurance, employee benefits, personal lines, and retirement and wealth services, mostly through local offices that often keep an acquired agency's identity. Specialty teams focus on industries and lines such as construction and transportation; we did not verify a complete list. Newell said he plans to invest in talent, expand vertical expertise and speed up enterprise-wide AI enablement.

Who it serves

World's clients range from households and small businesses to middle-market companies, depending on the local office. Many customers come to it through an acquired community agency. Because the group is a collection of local brands under one owner, the quality and pricing of service can differ by office. How a group like this compares with a local agent or a direct insurer is covered in independent agent, broker, captive agent or direct? and how to choose a commercial insurance broker.

How it is paid

World is private and we did not find a compensation disclosure on its public pages. As a retail broker, it is generally paid by commissions from insurers as a percentage of premium, by client-paid fees on some accounts (common for benefits and consulting), and potentially by contingent or supplemental commissions that depend on volume, growth or profitability with a given insurer. Clients can request written disclosure of all compensation on an account. how commercial insurance brokers get paid explains the common arrangements.

Recent deals

World's press releases are mostly small agency purchases. Examples that we saw reported:

  • Wolpert Insurance Agency (Worcester, Massachusetts): acquired October 1, 2025.
  • Fillmore Insurance Agency (Brooklyn, New York) and Clarke Insurance (Mount Holly, New Jersey): both reported effective March 1, 2026.
  • TE Freuler (Somerset, New Jersey): closed June 1, 2026; Insurance Journal reported it on September 16, 2026. The agency has served clients since 1963 and has an office in Newark. Terms were not disclosed.

An OPTIS Partners summary says World completed nine acquisitions in the first quarter of 2026. We did not verify that count. This acquisition cadence is typical of sponsor-backed consolidators; see private equity and the consolidation of insurance brokers and the largest commercial insurance brokers, ranked by 2025 revenue.

Strengths and weaknesses

  • Strengths: a large local office network; patient institutional capital from two sponsors; a new chief executive from the national-broker world; steady agency purchasing.
  • Weaknesses: a large debt-and-equity capital structure typical of consolidators; integration and consistency across hundreds of offices; limited public financial disclosure; leadership transition in 2026.

Buyers considering a World office may wish to ask who their account manager is, whether the agency's former owners remain involved, and how coverage is marketed to insurers. A Writing a broker RFP for a commercial insurance program can be a structured way to compare World with other firms.

Two sponsors in the ownership chain also matter to buyers in a practical way. Sponsor-backed firms usually plan for a later sale or recapitalization, which can change ownership again; the Goldman Sachs investment of 2023 followed the 2020 Charlesbank investment by only three years. That does not say anything about service quality, but a client with a multi-year relationship may reasonably ask how the firm would handle a future change of control, and whether the local team has long-term incentives to stay.
