Overview

Allied World is a Bermuda-based specialty insurer and reinsurer that writes most of its U.S. business out of New York. It is a large-account and specialty market: excess casualty and lead umbrella, management and professional liability, healthcare liability, environmental, construction and property, mostly for midsize and large companies. It is majority owned by Toronto's Fairfax Financial Holdings, which held about 83% at the end of 2025.

Allied World is not ranked separately here. Its U.S. premiums count toward the Fairfax group, the 13th-largest business insurer in the country by 2025 commercial premiums. Across all its markets, Allied World wrote about $7.4 billion of gross premiums and $5.1 billion of net premiums in 2025, with $7.1 billion of shareholders' equity and 1,704 employees, according to Fairfax's 2025 annual report.

U.S. policies are issued by Allied World Assurance Company (U.S.) Inc., Allied World National Assurance Company, Allied World Insurance Company and Allied World Specialty Insurance Company on an admitted basis, and by Allied World Surplus Lines Insurance Company on an excess and surplus lines basis. The group also includes a reinsurance arm (Allied World Re), Lloyd's Syndicate 2232 and offices in Europe, Canada, Asia-Pacific and, since June 2026, Dubai. It sells through brokers and agents and, for programs, through program administrators.

Lou Iglesias has been president and CEO since 2019.

History

Allied World has operated under that brand from Bermuda since 2001. It became a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (ticker AWH) and was organized as a Swiss holding company, Allied World Assurance Company Holdings, AG, by the time Fairfax bid for it.

Fairfax announced the acquisition in December 2016 and completed it on July 6, 2017, after about 96% of the shares were tendered in its exchange offer. Fairfax brought in co-investors to fund part of the price: OMERS, the Ontario municipal pension plan, committed $1 billion for about 21% of Allied World, and AIMCo committed $500 million for just over 10%. Fairfax says it paid $4.2 billion for its own stake.

Under Fairfax, Allied World has roughly doubled its gross premiums, from $3.4 billion in 2018, its first full year in the group, to $7.4 billion in 2025. Recent milestones:

  • May 22, 2025: AM Best upgraded Allied World's operating companies to A+ (Superior) from A (Excellent).
  • May 29, 2026: Fairfax extended its option to buy out Allied World's minority shareholders to December 31, 2029.
  • May and June 2026: opened offices in Melbourne and in Dubai's DIFC.

Business insurance products

Casualty. Primary casualty, excess casualty and lead umbrella with a broad industry appetite. Allied World can write the umbrella or follow-form excess in the lead or high excess position, including over its own primary. It also writes Defense Base Act and foreign voluntary workers' compensation for contractors working overseas, with claims handled by Broadspire.

Construction. Targets general contractors, building trades and specialty trades with primary and excess liability, builders' risk and equipment, contractors pollution and architects and engineers professional liability (up to $20 million per policy). It also writes wrap-up programs (CCIPs and OCIPs) and project-specific policies.

Management and financial lines. D&O, EPL, fiduciary and Side A DIC for public companies, private companies and nonprofits; a ForceField package for private and nonprofit organizations (crime and employed lawyers coverage only inside the package with D&O); and financial institutions coverage.

Professional liability and cyber. E&O for a long list of professional classes, from insurance agents to technology firms, and a cyber policy with first- and third-party coverage, optional tech E&O and incident response, up to $10 million aggregate with no minimum premium.

Healthcare. Hospital and facility professional liability, physician groups, clinical research, managed care E&O, healthcare management liability and a healthcare environmental policy that covers healthcare-associated infections.

Environmental. Site pollution, storage tank, contractors pollution and professional, combined GL and pollution, environmental umbrella and follow-form excess.

Property and specialty. Property up to $10 million per policy for non-catastrophe risks and $5 million for primary accounts in critical catastrophe zones, with an appetite for high-hazard fire; inland marine for contractors' equipment, cargo and warehouse legal liability; trade credit (accounts receivable) insurance; crisis management; business and scholastic travel accident. The programs division offers admitted and non-admitted products in all 50 states through program administrators.

Who it insures

Allied World's core U.S. customer is a midsize to large company whose broker needs specialty underwriting or high limits: contractors and design firms, hospitals and other healthcare organizations, financial institutions, public companies buying D&O, and businesses with environmental or high-hazard property exposures. Its property unit openly takes catastrophe-exposed and high-hazard fire risks, within the per-policy limits above.

It is not a small business carrier in the U.S. Its SME and local workers' comp products are sold in Hong Kong and Singapore, not here. A small U.S. business is most likely to end up with Allied World paper through a program administrator or a specialty niche such as storage tank pollution.

How to buy

Through a broker or agent. Allied World's U.S. operation lists a broker engagement leader and a submission inbox, and each product unit names its own underwriters. Program business comes through program administrators. For storage tank systems, agents can quote and bind pollution coverage online through (i-bind). There is no direct or online purchase option for business owners.

Claims

Allied World takes claims and notices of potential claims by email at [email protected]. It does not list a claims phone number on its U.S. claims page. Allied World tells policyholders to report as soon as they know of a matter and to check the policy for specific reporting requirements, which matters on claims-made D&O, E&O and cyber policies. Telling your broker is not notice to Allied World, and you must notify any excess carriers separately.

After a report, Allied World sends an acknowledgment letter naming the assigned claims analyst. The claims team has local authority to handle primary and excess property, casualty, professional, management and healthcare liability claims. Healthcare and environmental policyholders get risk management services, including an environmental helpline and emergency response resources.

Financial strength and ratings

AM Best upgraded the financial strength rating of Allied World's operating insurers to A+ (Superior) from A (Excellent) on May 22, 2025, with a stable outlook. AM Best assessed the balance sheet as strongest and moved its view of operating performance from adequate to strong because of improved underwriting results and investment income. Allied World's ratings page lists, as of May 31, 2026, A+ (stable) from AM Best, AA- (Very Strong, stable) from S&P and A2 (Good, positive outlook) from Moody's for its operating companies. Some older product pages on its website still cite the earlier A rating.

Allied World posted an 89.3% combined ratio and $546 million of underwriting profit in 2025, the largest underwriting profit of any Fairfax company. Fairfax reported that North American insurance premiums fell in the first half of 2026 as property rates declined.

Strengths and weaknesses

Allied World is a well-capitalized specialty market with real depth in excess casualty, healthcare, environmental and management liability. It is built for brokers and larger accounts, though, and its claims intake is less hands-on than a small-business carrier's.

  • Strengths: A+ from AM Best since May 2025, AA- from S&P and A2 from Moody's. An 89.3% combined ratio and $546 million underwriting profit in 2025. Lead umbrella and high excess capacity, plus admitted and surplus lines paper. Specialist units for healthcare, environmental, construction and D&O.
  • Weaknesses: No small-business product line in the U.S. and no direct buying. Claims are reported by email, with no published claims phone line. About 17% is held by minority investors, and Fairfax holds an option through 2029 to buy them out, so the ownership could still change. North American property premiums fell in 2026 as rates softened.
