Overview

Acrisure began in 2005 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as an insurance broker, and now describes itself as a global fintech company that sells insurance, reinsurance, payroll, benefits, cybersecurity and other services. In Business Insurance's ranking of the world's largest brokers, published June 26, 2026, Acrisure placed No. 10, down two places, with 2025 brokerage revenue of $3.75 billion, up 3.4% from restated 2024 revenue. Its gross revenue, which includes business services, was $4.82 billion, up 5.2%. Chief executive Greg Williams told Business Insurance that organic growth was 5.1% in 2025.

When the company raised capital in May 2025, Business Insurance reported more than 19,000 employees across 23 countries and about $5 billion in annual revenue, and said employees are the majority owners. We did not find a current, company-published headcount, and the figure will be affected by the 2026 reductions described below.

History

Business Insurance reports that Acrisure was founded in 2005 in Grand Rapids. The article says the firm has made about 1,000 acquisitions since then, which makes it one of the most acquisitive firms in the industry, though the pace slowed markedly in 2025 and 2026. We confirmed the Grand Rapids address (100 Ottawa Avenue SW) from a state business registration, not from a company page.

The firm kept adding non-insurance services: payroll, cybersecurity, managed IT and benefits administration. That strategy is why the revenue figures above differ by about $1 billion between "brokerage revenue" and "gross revenue."

Services

Acrisure's retail insurance business places commercial and personal lines through local agencies. Business Insurance reports that about 10% of its brokerage revenue is personal lines, about 17% of revenue is non-U.S., and business services make up about 18% of revenue. Services include employee benefits, cybersecurity, managed IT, and payroll and human capital management. Its reinsurance broking unit and its Wholesure wholesale brand serve other brokers and insurers; its wholesale division was announced in February 2024 under that brand. For how wholesale placements work, see wholesale brokers and surplus lines placement: how hard risks get insured.

Who it serves

Acrisure's stated aim, per Business Insurance, is to be a one-stop shop for small and midmarket business clients. Its local brands serve owner-operated companies, while the platform tries to cross-sell non-insurance services. S&P noted in 2026 that retention has been weaker in the North American retail unit, which is the company's largest by revenue and is still integrating. How it is paid

We did not find a page on Acrisure's website, in its press releases or in the Business Insurance profile that explains how Acrisure is compensated, and as a private company it publishes no audited statements. Brokers in the industry earn commissions paid by insurers, negotiated client fees, or a combination, and some also receive supplemental or contingent commissions. Acrisure also earns revenue from non-insurance services such as payroll, which clients pay for directly. Ask your Acrisure office for its compensation disclosure in writing, including anything an insurer pays beyond the commission. how commercial insurance brokers get paid explains the models.

Recent deals

  • May 2025 capital raise: Acrisure announced a $2.1 billion round of new convertible senior preferred stock led by Bain Capital's special situations arm, at a $32 billion valuation, about 40% above its previous raise three years earlier. BDT & MSD Partners, Fidelity, Apollo and Gallatin Point took part. The company said proceeds would refinance an existing preferred instrument, fund acquisitions and develop its platform. It kept open the option of a public listing.
  • Heartland Payroll Services: Business Insurance reports Acrisure bought Global Payments' Heartland Payroll Services for $1.1 billion in 2025. We did not verify the closing date.
  • Layoffs: Business Insurance reported that Acrisure announced cuts of about 2,250 people, roughly 11% of its workforce, in May 2026, phased through 2027, citing AI-driven reductions in manual work.
  • Credit outlook: the article says S&P affirmed Acrisure's B rating in April 2026 but revised the outlook to negative on higher leverage.

See private equity and the consolidation of insurance brokers for how the private-equity-backed roll-up model has developed.

Strengths and weaknesses

Acrisure sells a bundle that few other brokers match for a small business: insurance, benefits, payroll and IT security from one parent. The risks are also on record. Leverage is high by the rating agency's measure, margins narrowed in 2025 (the company estimates 32.7%, while S&P's more conservative calculation is about 21%), and the firm is cutting staff while integrating acquisitions.

  • Strengths: broad service bundle; employee ownership; large capital raise in 2025.
  • Weaknesses: high leverage and a negative S&P outlook; client retention pressure in North American retail; limited public disclosure of how it is paid.
