Overview
SECURA Insurance is a Wisconsin mutual that, since leaving personal lines, writes only business, nonprofit, special-event and farm insurance. Its NAIC group, made up of SECURA Insurance Company and its pooled affiliate SECURA Supreme Insurance Company, ranked No. 76 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $1.03 billion, based on NAIC market share data. That is about 0.21% of the national commercial market. It is not among the 10 largest writers of any commercial line nationally. Its biggest commercial lines are commercial multiple peril, the package line ($316.9 million), commercial auto ($309.9 million), workers' compensation ($130.5 million) and other liability ($118.8 million).
SECURA is based in Neenah, Wisconsin, and sells only through independent agents in 13 states: Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Policyholders own it through a mutual holding company structure adopted in 2021. Garth Wicinsky has been president and CEO since 2022.
History
- 1900: Julius Bubolz founded Farmers Home Mutual Hail, Tornado and Cyclone Insurance Company in Seymour, Wisconsin, on March 1, 1900.
- 1926–1936: The company became Home Mutual Hail-Tornado Insurance Company, then Home Mutual Insurance Company in 1932. Gordon Bubolz, the founder's son, took over in 1936.
- 1950: Homestead Mutual was formed to serve larger, more commercial farms.
- 1986: Home Mutual took the name SECURA Insurance, A Mutual Company. Leadership passed from the Bubolz family to John Bykowski in 1997, Dave Gross in 2014 and Garth Wicinsky in 2022.
- 2004–2010: AM Best upgraded SECURA to A (Excellent) from A- in June 2004. In 2010 SECURA introduced its specialty and agribusiness lines.
- 2019–2021: The company moved into a new home office at 1500 Mutual Way in the Village of Fox Crossing in 2019, and restructured into a mutual holding company in 2021.
- 2023: On October 20, SECURA announced it would leave personal lines after weather and inflation losses in home and auto. It stopped taking new home and auto business on November 1, 2023, and nonrenewed the rest over two years, finishing by December 31, 2025. Personal lines had been more than 20% of the company, over $200 million of premium. S&P Global Market Intelligence put the 2022 combined ratio across all lines at 111.6%, the worst in at least 25 years.
- 2025: SECURA marked its 125th year, said it had fully replaced the lost personal premium with commercial and niche business, and passed $1 billion of direct written premium again, with a record $156.7 million of new business.
Business insurance products
SECURA sells standard commercial coverage, mostly as packages, through its agents:
- commercial property, general liability and commercial auto, with inland marine and equipment breakdown;
- workers' compensation and umbrella;
- cyber, employment practices liability, errors and omissions, and D&O, including D&O for nonprofit boards;
- product recall expense coverage for manufacturers.
Workers' compensation comes with a 24/7 Nurse Hotline run with Medcor. A registered nurse triages the injury and can move the worker to a telemedicine doctor who treats occupational injuries. Every comp policy includes Crisis Care, on-site support from trauma-trained behavioral health specialists after a serious workplace incident. Injured workers get a prescription drug card the company says is accepted at more than 58,000 pharmacies, plus multilingual claims service and a return-to-work program.
Special events are a SECURA specialty. It insures events from antique shows and car shows to rodeos, walk/runs, festivals and wedding receptions, with short-term general liability, liquor liability, hired and non-owned auto for volunteers running errands, an exhibition floater for equipment, and prize coverage for hole-in-one and other contests. SECURA says an event can be covered within 24 hours. A separate event policy keeps an event claim off your main policy's loss record and makes it easy to name event organizers as additional insureds. See special event insurance.
Farm. SECURA's farm policy combines farm property and liability with the family's home, personal property and auto, plus farm umbrella and farm workers' comp. The site lists programs for beef, dairy, grain, fruit and vegetable, and small farms.
Who it insures
SECURA publishes long class lists. The main groups:
- Nonprofit insurance: it is a preferred carrier of Boys & Girls Clubs of America and lists food pantries, community centers, chambers of commerce, children's museums, Head Start programs, homeless shelters, United Way agencies, performing arts groups and sober living homes;
- sports and recreation: fitness clubs, Gym and fitness studio insurance, martial arts and dance studios, youth sports leagues, campgrounds, family entertainment centers, climbing walls, zip lines, hunting guides and horse stables;
- General contractor insurance and trades: commercial GCs, carpentry, concrete, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, painting, flooring, irrigation and drainage, plus farm-related trades such as custom farming and manure pumping;
- manufacturing: food and beverage, dairy processors, metal, plastics, machinery, wood products, printing, and produce packing;
- agritainment, hospitality, retail, building and office risks and professional services.
The farm roots show in the contractor and manufacturing lists, which include agricultural equipment installers and dairy and produce processors. SECURA does not offer business coverage outside its 13 states.
How to buy
Only through an independent agent. SECURA's site does not quote; it sends buyers to an agent locator, and coverage questions go to the agent. In 2025 SECURA appointed 63 new agencies and added 94 agency locations. Agents can also enroll policyholders in the SECURA Service Center. Its portal gives auto ID cards, policy documents and certificates of insurance, and its staff take service calls weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central. Policyholders not enrolled work through their agent. Premium audit questions go to [email protected].
Claims
Report a claim online, by phone at 800-318-2136 (Central and Eastern time zones) or 866-356-7870 (Mountain), or by email to [email protected]. Claims calls are taken 24/7. SECURA says it calls you within 24 hours of a reported loss. For a workplace injury that isn't an emergency, the supervisor and the employee should call the Nurse Hotline at 888-333-3334 first; the call also starts the comp claim. Auto claims can use the SureChoice Repair network of collision shops and a glass claim service, and policyholders get identity theft recovery help through Identity Resolution.
SECURA's risk management consultants make on-site visits. Policyholders also get free safety programs, safety talks, on-demand training videos and employment practices resources, plus discounted online and OSHA training.
Financial strength and ratings
SECURA has been rated A (Excellent) by AM Best since its upgrade from A- in June 2004; its 2025 annual report calls 2025 the 22nd consecutive year at that level. AM Best last affirmed the ratings on March 12, 2026, keeping the A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating (stable outlook) and the "a+" Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating with its negative outlook. The most recent AM Best rating change came on March 14, 2024. AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook and the "a+" Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating, and revised the issuer credit outlook to negative. It cited weak results in the two prior years from weather losses, adverse claim cost trends and sharply higher reinsurance costs. At the same time, AM Best rated a new $75 million issue of 8.67% surplus notes due 2039 at "a-". In October 2023 AM Best said the personal lines exit would be favorable for SECURA's credit profile. The issuer credit outlook was still negative at the March 2026 affirmation.
The 2025 numbers point to recovery: a combined ratio of 97.7% (loss ratio 50.5%, loss adjustment expense 11.2%, underwriting expense 35.0%, dividends 1.0%), policyholders' surplus up to $776 million and assets of $2.2 billion. No S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings are published.
Strengths and weaknesses
SECURA is a long-established mutual with real depth in nonprofits, events, recreation and farms. It is now a commercial-only carrier in 13 states, still rebuilding margins after the losses that drove it out of personal lines.
- Strengths: Broad, published appetite for nonprofits, special events and sports and recreation that many standard carriers avoid, with events bound in about a day. Farm program that packages the farm with the family's home and auto. Workers' comp backed by a 24/7 nurse hotline, telemedicine and Crisis Care on every policy. AM Best A (Excellent) every year since 2004, and a 97.7% combined ratio in 2025.
- Weaknesses: Business coverage in only 13 states. Independent agents only, with no online quoting and self-service limited to Service Center accounts. AM Best set a negative issuer credit outlook in March 2024 after the 111.6% combined ratio of 2022 and other weak results. Businesses that bought home and auto from SECURA through the same agent had to move those policies by the end of 2025.
