Overview
Fortegra is a specialty insurer based in Jacksonville, Florida, that does most of its business through partners. Managing general agents (MGAs) and program administrators write surplus lines and admitted commercial programs on its paper. Lenders, auto dealers, retailers and manufacturers sell its warranties, service contracts and credit protection to their customers. It describes its aim as being "a quality market serving MGAs and brokers seeking to underwrite niche programs." Unlike a pure fronting carrier, it keeps a meaningful share of the risk.
In the NAIC's 2025 data, which predate the sale, the group appears under its former parent as TIPTREE FIN GRP. It ranked No. 63 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, with $1.33 billion, based on NAIC market share data. That is about 0.27% of the national commercial market. It is not among the 10 largest writers of any single commercial line nationally. The largest commercial lines are:
- other liability ($606.7 million);
- inland marine ($221.5 million);
- fire ($210.3 million);
- commercial multiple peril ($198.8 million).
All lines together came to $2.03 billion.
The U.S. property and casualty companies are Fortegra Specialty Insurance Company, its surplus lines company, plus Lyndon Southern Insurance Company, Insurance Company of the South, Blue Ridge Indemnity Company and Response Indemnity Company of California. Fortegra also owns life and health insurers, a premium finance company (South Bay Acceptance Corporation), and insurers in Europe and the UK. Rick Kahlbaugh is chairman and CEO.
The sale to DB Insurance is complete. On September 25, 2025, DB Insurance, Korea's leading property and casualty insurer, agreed to buy 100% of Fortegra from Tiptree and Warburg Pincus for about $1.65 billion in cash. Tiptree shareholders approved the merger on December 3, 2025, with about 81% of votes cast in favor. The deal closed on May 29, 2026, and Fortegra is now a wholly owned subsidiary of DB Insurance. DB Insurance called it the first purchase of a U.S. insurer by a Korean non-life insurer. Policies stay with the same issuing companies. Business insurance products
Specialty programs. This is the growth engine. Fortegra partners with MGAs on admitted and non-admitted programs. It provides underwriting and product development, claims management, compliance help, reporting and marketing support, and it shares risk and reward with the MGA. Under Tiptree, E&S premiums reached $690.4 million in the first half of 2025, up 23.8% from a year earlier. The NAIC line mix shows mostly general liability, property and package business.
Commercial equipment and property. Through partners, Fortegra insures commercial equipment, from small tools to large machinery and HVAC systems, against theft, damage and breakdown. Coverage includes property, liability and equipment breakdown. See equipment breakdown insurance: what it covers that property insurance does not.
Warranty and credit protection. This is a large part of the company but mostly bought by consumers through a business. It includes vehicle service contracts and GAP for auto dealers, consumer goods and mobile device protection, and credit insurance for lenders' borrowers. A dealer or lender that wants to offer these products deals with Fortegra directly as a partner.
Premium financing. South Bay Acceptance Corporation finances commercial insurance premiums for agents' clients. It sets no minimum or maximum size and can combine several policies on one invoice. See paying commercial premiums: installments and premium financing.
Who it insures
For commercial insurance, Fortegra insures whoever its MGA programs target. Generally that means small and mid-sized businesses whose risks fit niche programs in the surplus lines market. Fortegra does not publish a list of MGA partners or a class appetite guide for business owners. Its partner pages name the business segments it works with: auto dealers, financial institutions, manufacturers, medical device and pharmaceutical companies, administrators, and associations and sponsors.
It writes in all 50 states and eight European countries, with U.S. offices in Jacksonville, Chicago, Omaha, Dallas, Iselin (New Jersey) and elsewhere. Property exposure has bitten: the California wildfires added $30.1 million of net catastrophe losses in the first half of 2025.
How to buy
You don't buy commercial coverage from Fortegra directly:
- Your retail agent places the account with an MGA or program administrator, often through a wholesale broker for surplus lines.
- The program issues the policy on one of Fortegra's companies.
- Billing and policy changes go through the program administrator named on your declarations page, not through Fortegra.
Agents and brokers can propose new programs through Fortegra's partner contact form. Read Managing general agents (MGAs): what they are and what they mean for buyers and program business: niche insurance through program administrators for how these programs work. For surplus lines policies, see excess and surplus lines insurance explained, including the general lack of state guaranty fund protection.
Claims
For specialty (commercial) policies, report claims to Fortegra's specialty claims unit:
- Phone: 844-758-8210, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern.
- Email: [email protected].
Include your name, policy number, address, phone and email, and the date, time, location, type and description of the loss. Once a claim is open, contact the adjuster named in your claim notice email to check its status. Some programs route claims to the MGA's own administrator, so check your policy first.
Warranty, auto, consumer goods, mobile device and credit protection claims have separate claim centers on fortegra.com.
Financial strength and ratings
AM Best upgraded the financial strength ratings of Fortegra's insurance companies to A (Excellent) from A- in August 2026, as announced on August 6, 2026. It also raised the long-term issuer credit ratings to "a" from "a-", with a stable outlook, and took the ratings off review with positive implications. AM Best cited Fortegra's strategic importance to DB Insurance and the benefit of belonging to a larger, higher-rated group. DB Insurance itself is rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best and A+ by S&P. AM Best puts Fortegra in Financial Size Category X.
KBRA also upgraded its ratings at the same time: the key insurers' financial strength ratings to A from A-, and The Fortegra Group's issuer rating to BBB+ from BBB.
Recent results come from the deal and Tiptree's reports:
- In 2024, Fortegra reported $3.07 billion of gross written premiums and $140 million of net income.
- Its long-term combined ratio has been about 90%.
- In the second quarter of 2025, the combined ratio was 88.5%.
- Stockholders' equity was $730.9 million on June 30, 2025.
Strengths and weaknesses
Fortegra pairs a specialty program platform with a large warranty and credit business, and it now has a bigger, higher-rated owner. For a business owner, though, the experience depends heavily on the MGA running the program.
- Strengths: It was upgraded to A (Excellent) in August 2026 after joining DB Insurance, which is rated A+. It offers both admitted and surplus lines paper in all 50 states. E&S premiums have grown fast, and the combined ratio has run near 90%. It publishes a direct specialty claims line and email.
- Weaknesses: You can't buy commercial coverage directly, and billing and service run through program administrators. It publishes no appetite guide or partner list for business owners. Integration under a new foreign owner began only in 2026. It has some catastrophe exposure, as the 2025 California wildfire losses showed.
