The Hartford vs Travelers
Travelers is larger and rated A++; The Hartford leads in workers' comp and sells small policies direct online as well as through agents.
Verdict
Travelers and The Hartford are neighbors in more than geography. Both are public, standard-market carriers that write nearly every class of main-street and middle-market business. Travelers is the bigger book: $27.13 billion of 2025 commercial premiums and the No. 1 rank, against $14.61 billion and No. 6 for The Hartford (NAIC data). On financial strength Travelers holds A++ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed August 2025, while The Hartford holds A+ (Superior), affirmed July 2026. Both are strong; A++ is the higher grade.
The sharpest difference is how you buy. Travelers sells business insurance only through independent agents and brokers and does not quote small business online. The Hartford uses agents too, but small businesses can also quote and buy online or by phone. That makes it a natural comparison for a shop owner who wants a price without waiting on an agency. The trade-off is that coverage bought direct comes without an agent reviewing exclusions and limits.
On lines, The Hartford is the No. 1 U.S. workers' compensation writer and No. 2 in package policies. Travelers is No. 1 in package policies, surety and fidelity, and No. 2 in workers' comp, general liability and commercial auto. If you are a contractor who needs bonding next to your casualty program, Travelers has the edge. If workers' comp and a BOP are the whole program, both belong in the market. Price depends on class, payroll, loss history and the underwriter, so have your broker quote both.
Choose The Hartford if
- You run a small business and want to get a price online or by phone, rather than only through an agent.
- A business owner's policy plus workers' comp is the core of your program; The Hartford says a BOP may carry a discount of up to 10% when the same business buys its workers' comp.
- You are a middle-market company with revenue over $10 million wanting package, comp and auto from one carrier.
- You may need a surplus lines outlet within the same group, through a wholesale broker and Maxum or Navigators.
Choose Travelers if
- You need surety: bid, performance and payment bonds from the country's largest surety writer, placed with your casualty program.
- You want the highest AM Best grade available, A++, and the largest balance sheet in the class.
- Your account is large or complicated: National Accounts handles workers' comp, auto and general liability on loss-sensitive terms.
- You run trucks. Northland has its own claim line and sits inside the Travelers group.
- You work through an independent agent and want broad industry practices in construction, manufacturing, technology, energy and real estate.

Before choosing, ask which company issues the policy, since both groups use many legal entities and each has a surplus lines arm whose paper is non-admitted. Compare the forms and endorsements line by line, not only the premium, and ask how claims are handled for your class. The Hartford added to general liability and commercial auto reserves in the second quarter of 2026, so ask your broker how that is showing up in renewal terms.
