Both are agent-sold with online small business quoting. The Hartford is larger, A+ rated and comp-heavy; Nationwide is a mutual strong in farms and programs.
Verdict
Nationwide and The Hartford are close in method and different in emphasis. Both sell mainly through independent agents, both offer online or phone quoting for small businesses, and both have a specialty and E&S arm in the group. The Hartford ranked No. 6 by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums at $14.61 billion; Nationwide ranked No. 14 at $8.08 billion (NAIC data). The Hartford is a public company (NYSE: HIG); Nationwide is a Columbus mutual owned by its policyholders.
The books differ. The Hartford is No. 1 in workers' comp, No. 2 in package policies and No. 4 in products liability. Nationwide's only national top-10 position is farmowners, where it is No. 2, but its commercial shelf is broad: BOP, a middle-market commercial output policy, agribusiness, surety, medical stop-loss, and program business through MGAs (it cites more than 40 years and over $1 billion of program premium). The Hartford's specialty arm, Navigators, brings ocean marine and financial lines; Nationwide's E&S/Specialty unit, on Scottsdale paper, brings E&S and programs.
On financial strength, AM Best affirmed Nationwide's property-casualty companies at A (Excellent) in November 2025 and The Hartford at A+ (Superior) in July 2026. S&P has Nationwide at A+ (April 2026) and The Hartford at AA-. Moody's raised its outlook on Nationwide's P&C business to positive in October 2026. Both are secure; a contract that demands A+ from AM Best may favor The Hartford. Price depends on class and underwriter, so have your agent quote both.
