Hiscox vs The Hartford

Hiscox is an online-first specialist for professional firms; The Hartford is a top-6 package and workers' comp carrier with a direct door for small shops.

Verdict

Hiscox and The Hartford both sell to small businesses online, but they are not the same kind of company. The Hartford ranked No. 6 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, at $14.61 billion (NAIC). Hiscox ranked No. 99 at $626.0 million, and that figure leaves out what its Lloyd's syndicates write in the U.S. as surplus lines. Hiscox is a Bermuda-headquartered specialist with Lloyd's roots going back to 1901; The Hartford is a New York-listed carrier founded in 1810 that sells mainly through independent agents.

The split is in the product. Hiscox's U.S. admitted premium is almost all other liability: professional liability (E&O), general liability, cyber and BOP for consultants, tech firms, marketers and other service businesses. Workers' comp, umbrella and commercial auto come from partner carriers, not Hiscox paper. The Hartford is the largest U.S. workers' comp writer and second in commercial multiple peril, so a contractor, restaurant or retailer can get a BOP, comp, auto and property from one group, with middle-market and specialty (Navigators, Maxum) capacity behind it.

Both are well rated: AM Best A (Excellent) for Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. in November 2025, A+ (Superior) for The Hartford in July 2026. Price depends on class and loss history, so for a small service firm that could go either way, quote both.

Choose Hiscox if

  • You are a consultant, IT firm, marketer, architect or similar professional business that needs E&O alongside general liability.
  • A client contract demands professional liability and a certificate, and you want it bound online.
  • You are a one-person or very small shop outside Alaska; Hiscox sells online in 49 states and D.C.
  • You are a broker placing professional, media, cyber or specialty risks, including through Lloyd's syndicates.

Choose The Hartford if

  • You need workers' compensation, commercial auto or property packaged with liability from one carrier.
  • You run a contractor, restaurant, retail, salon or medical office account that fits its small business appetite.
  • You are a middle-market company, over $10 million in revenue, that wants risk engineering and a multistate comp program.
  • You want an independent agent to shop and service the account, or a 24/7 claim line at 800-327-3636.

Before choosing, read the issuing company on each declarations page, especially for Hiscox partner-written lines, and check the professional services definition and exclusions on any E&O quote, since E&O is claims-made and a lapse can leave past work uninsured. Buying either direct means no agent reviews your limits for you.
