Brotherhood Mutual vs Church Mutual

Both insure houses of worship; Church Mutual is rated A and takes all faiths and nonprofits, Brotherhood Mutual is rated B++ and Christian ministries only.

Verdict

Brotherhood Mutual and Church Mutual are the two names that come up first when a congregation shops for insurance. Church Mutual ranked No. 70 among U.S. business insurers by 2025 commercial lines direct premiums written, at $1.14 billion (NAIC); Brotherhood Mutual ranked No. 83 at $918.8 million. Both are concentrated in commercial multiple peril, the package policy combining property and liability ($769.6 million at Church Mutual, $823.7 million at Brotherhood). Both converted to mutual holding company structures, Church Mutual on January 1, 2020 and Brotherhood Mutual on July 1, 2024, with policyholders as members of the holding company.

Appetite and distribution differ. Brotherhood Mutual insures Christian ministries only: churches, Christian schools, colleges, camps and mission organizations, through about 70 ministry-specialist independent agencies (2025) and an online quote request. Church Mutual takes houses of worship of all denominations, plus nonprofits and human services, camps and recreation, and public, private and charter schools. It sells through its own regional sales representatives, and through selected agents and brokers for house-of-worship and school accounts with premiums of $25,000 or more.

The rating gap is the fact to confront first. AM Best affirmed Brotherhood Mutual at B++ (Good) in July 2026 (stable outlook on the issuer rating), after a downgrade in April 2024. Church Mutual is A (Excellent) with a negative outlook, affirmed April 2026. Many leases, loan covenants and contracts require A- or better, which B++ may not meet. Price depends on your property, claims history and state, so quote both.

Choose Brotherhood Mutual if

  • You are a Christian church, school, college, camp or mission organization, and want an agent who sells only ministry insurance.
  • You want ministry-specific options: Sexual Acts Liability, Ministry Counseling Liability, Religious Freedom Protection, Ministry Continuation Coverage, Mission Protection travel cover.
  • No lender or contract in your file requires an A- rating, and you have checked.
  • You want payroll, HR and benefits through its Brotherhood Works affiliate.

Choose Church Mutual if

  • You need a stronger AM Best letter: A (Excellent), although with a negative outlook.
  • You are a non-Christian congregation, or a nonprofit, shelter, arts group, camp or school that is not part of a ministry.
  • You want a regional company representative as your point of contact rather than an agent.
  • You are a larger house of worship and your broker can bring $25,000 or more in account premium.
  • You value its water-damage sensor and abuse-prevention programs.

Before choosing, read the abuse and molestation limits and any sublimits, which matter most for youth programs; see abuse and molestation liability coverage. Check the property valuation basis and weather deductibles, since both books are property-heavy, and confirm that the quoted rating satisfies your contracts (see how to review the insurance requirements in a contract). Church Mutual's profile notes it cut back some problem segments, so ask about renewal terms. See also Church insurance, AM Best rating and how to judge a business insurance company.
