AIG vs Chubb
Chubb is larger, A++ rated and reaches small firms online; AIG is a broker-only market for large, financial lines and multinational programs.
Verdict
Chubb and AIG meet on the same big programs: excess casualty towers, D&O, multinational packages and hard-to-place E&S risks. By 2025 commercial lines direct premiums, Chubb ranked No. 2 at $23.25 billion and AIG No. 7 at $14.45 billion (NAIC data). Both are public companies and both sell through intermediaries, but Chubb reaches further down the size scale. It routes businesses with $2 million or less in annual revenue to an online quote site and sells the business owner's policy through agents. AIG has no small business quote page. It reaches small accounts mostly through Western World's binding authority, Lexington and program partners.
The ratings differ. AM Best rates Chubb's main subsidiaries A++ (Superior), affirmed January 2026. AIG's National Union, Lexington and American Home are A (Excellent) from AM Best, affirmed November 2025 with a positive outlook, though AA- from S&P and Fitch and A1 from Moody's after 2025 upgrades. AIG's profile also notes that it spent most of 2008 to 2020 losing money on underwriting; 2025 brought $2.3 billion of underwriting income and a 90.1 combined ratio. Eric Andersen became CEO on June 1, 2026.
In lines, Chubb leads in general and excess liability, products liability and crime. AIG is No. 1 in ocean marine and No. 2 in aircraft, and sells global programs in about 190 countries and jurisdictions, plus fronting and captive services. If your program is financial lines, marine, energy or aviation, AIG belongs in the market with Chubb. Neither is cheaper in general, and price turns on class, loss history and the underwriter, so have your broker approach both.
Choose AIG if
- You need ocean marine, aviation or aerospace capacity, or a specialty such as political risk or trade credit.
- You run a captive or want a fronting carrier; AIG says it has offered these services for 50 years.
- You operate in many countries and want a coordinated global program through a network covering about 190 countries and jurisdictions.
- You are a school, municipality, first responder or house of worship, served through the Glatfelter niche.
- You have a hard-to-place property or casualty risk and your wholesale broker can use Lexington or Western World.
Choose Chubb if
- You are a small professional or office-type firm with $2 million or less in revenue who wants to start a quote online.
- Your lawsuit exposure is the main worry: products liability, D&O, EPL or professional liability.
- You want the AM Best A++ grade, for a contract or lender that requires it.
- You want middle market and small commercial packages, workers' comp and a business owner's policy from the same group.
- You rank claim service above price. Chubb placed second in J.D. Power's 2026 small commercial study.

Before you choose, find out which company is on the quote. AIG writes through National Union, American Home and others; Chubb has legacy Chubb and legacy ACE paper with separate claim lines. A Lexington, Western World or Westchester policy is non-admitted, so ask about excess and surplus lines consequences, including usually no guaranty fund protection. Compare forms, not just premium, and ask how claims in your class are handled. See how to judge a business insurance company, AM Best rating and the business insurance quote comparison worksheet.
